When I was a sophomore in high school, I went on a trip to England and France with school. Before I left, my mom insisted on buying me a new ski jacket (since the trip was in February), but I didn’t want to make her pay too much for it so we got the only color on sale – a very loud green that looked like a mix of teal and pine tree green. Anyway, way back when, I was also in the middle of my colored skinny jeans phase, and I picked up a hand-knitted sheep hat from Stonehenge’s gift shop. Anyway, fast forward to the day we left Mont Saint-Michel. At the time, there were only two times the bus could run from the island given the time – really, really early or after dinner. So, during the walk to the early, early bus, my friend, Lauren, realized she’d forgotten her retainers in the hotel, and she and one of the chaperones went running back, hoping they’d make it back down the island in time for the bus. If not, they’d have missed the ride to Paris and it would have been a grand disaster. Anyway, the rest of the group and dozens of other people started boarding the buses, and my friend comes up beside me, breathless. She explains that she and the chaperone were hopelessly lost, hoping they’d find the rest of the group and get on the correct bus, when off in the distance she saw someone wearing red pants, a bright green jacket, and a wool sheep hat. And she said to the chaperone that was definitely the group. He asks her why she is so sure, and she explains that she sees me, in red pants, a green jacket, and a fluffy white hat. (I also had sequined snow boots at the time). He asks her why she is so certain that it’s me, and she asks, “would anyone else wear that in public?” He just replies, “fair point,”.
