My first real computer was called the HeadStart Explorer.
It was an IBM XT clone and it was glorious.
The processor chip inside was an 8088 running at 4 mhz.
You could run it in turbo mode and make it run at 8 megahertz.
I'm not sure why anyone would have wanted to run it in non turbo mode.
It came with a sweet 4 color CGA monitor.
That was pretty awesome at the time.
The best thing about it was that it came with something like 50 games because I bought it on clearance from a store called Highland Superstores.
I bought a display model that the guys who worked there had been loading games on for a long time and they just let me keep them all.
It cost $500 and I had saved that much up over a few holidays.
I don't think I had ever been as excited about anything in my entire life as I was about that Headstart Explorer computer.
The computer had a built in floppy drive and it had a keyboard that flipped down and was connected to the actual computer itself.
Most computers at the time had 640k memory.
The Headstart Explorer only had 512k however you could add on a giant hardware extension for a couple hundred bucks that would add 128K.
I have no idea why they just didn't include 640k memory but it never became an issue for me.
I used to stay up late at night and play the many games I had on my Headstart Explorer computer.
Most of them were pretty simple games like Alleycat where you just kind of jumped around and didn't do much of anything but you are an alley cat when you did it.
Eventually I was able to get some of the better games of the time on it.
It kind of amazes me that it was all one piece with it's own special monitor.
Everything was so proprietary back then.
My Headstart Explorer will always hold a special place in my thoughts and my dreams.
I have no idea where she is now. Probably in a landfill somewhere. That makes me sad.
Headstart Explorer..... wherever you are...... you will never be far from my heart.

I think i'm too young to know about this computer. Haha. I just barely remember netscape and MSN messenger. I think I also remember seeing AOL discs.
good times. Haha
I had a ton of AOL stuff.
I can't remember our first computer but I do know we got it in the early 90s when email was still a new thing people were getting into. It's crazy to look back and see how much technology has changed. The first game I ever played was a game called Hell Cab. I think it was a DOS game. All the first games I ever played were DOS games.
DOS games ruled.
