LIFE'S little ESCAPES...
“People talk about escapism as if it's a bad thing... Once you've escaped, once you come back, the world is not the same as when you left it. You come back to it with skills, weapons, knowledge you didn't have before. Then you are better equipped to deal with your current reality.” ― Neil Gaiman
Whether referring to figurative or literal escape, I think it is a fundamental necessity to retaining sanity in this world. We all live on what resembles a hamster wheel and a break from that constant monotony is really very important – not to mention reprieve from the levels of stress so many of us endure.
If I didn’t have my escape methods, I fear I might actually lose my mind!
Moments of escape in our lives allow us the opportunity to re-group our thoughts and emotions. It re-fills the cup of enthusiasm and gives us a few moments to “just not care”. There is an essential freedom in that!
In the sphere of figurative escape, for me, I would have to say that my longest standing method is through music - Coming home at the end of the day, kicking my shoes off, opening the doors, allowing the sunshine and fresh air into the house and sticking on my favourite tunes – normally rather loudly.
That is something I look forward to every single day of my life. There is NEVER a day that passes that I don’t enjoy that little bit of time to just “enjoy life”.
Music, much like the elements is so enormously powerful at invoking emotion and creating a certain kind of “mood” – so my selections are generally dependant on how I am feeling on that particular day. If it has been an exceptionally stressful day, I will generally stick on the old jazz and blues greats and often plenty of the “golden oldies”. Second to my family, music plays such an important role in my emotional and mental stability, I would go as far as to say it is like my best friend.
Second to music, cooking is another escape for me – I find it enormously therapeutic and as I have never been a “recipe follower”, I really love the creativity that it sparks within me. I love experimenting with different foods, flavours and combinations. My family are my most enthusiastic guinea pigs lol
Just as well I am what I would consider a relatively good cook then - as they are forced to play guinea pig every night of the week. Lol
Third on the list, but probably my favourite… (no points for guessing this one if you know me well…) is red wine! Yip – NOTHING on this earth beats the sound of that gorgeously velvet liquid pouring into a wine glass – and the moments which follow as that first sip hits your taste buds is simply heavenly and all the worries of the world simply melt away into deliciousness!
That for me, is the perfect daily trio of “figurative escape” – Good Music – Good Food and Good Wine!
Well folks - Cheers to that!!! ;)
“Reality doesn't impress me. I only believe in intoxication, in ecstasy, and when ordinary life shackles me, I escape, one way or another. No more walls.” ― Anaïs Nin
Until next time...

You said well, we all need a figurative escape - peace and relaxation. You do this through music, cooking and wine. I ride a bicycle, I write and look at the garden. Exellent post @jaynie
