DO IT with PASSION & PRIDE!

passion and pride.jpg

I am not sure whether it is something you are born with, something you are taught and then embrace or a bit of both, but it never ceases to amaze me how many people lack it – especially in the work place.

I am referring to taking pride in your endeavors.

I am the sort of person that will always go above and beyond. Half measures do not occupy any space on any page in my book. You know the whole “Do it properly or not at all” philosophy. Well that is me and I find it immensely frustrating having to deal with people who simply couldn’t give enough of a rats arse to do same.

Referring to the workplace, many people tell me that the reason I act and feel differently is because I am the boss and therefore hold a higher level of passion and interest in what I do than that of those who fall under the umbrella of employee

I have one word to say in response to that – RUBBISH!

I might have been a business owner for the better part of 17 years, but I wasn’t always… and I worked for several employers, most of which paid me really badly too – but that never prevented me from always delivering my absolute best in everything I did for their clients and business alike.

I think it is just about holding a certain level of pride in what you do and in turn for yourself as an individual.

For me, this approach filters down into absolutely every aspect of my life. Now granted I am somewhat OCD and am certain that this facet of my character contributes to a portion of the general outcome of “me” but it is by no means its entirety.

Whilst I generally avoid getting involved in too much graphic design or desktop publishing work anymore as I focus more on managing my business now (17 years of design was enough lol), the little bit that I do get stuck into, still retains the same level of quality that I have always delivered - and it just amazes me how NOT delivering 110% just simply doesn’t seem to bother other people.

To clarify – I am referring to things like attention to detail - Basic setup errors etc. Is it that they don’t see the rubbish they are putting out? Do they just not care?

It is almost as if they will throw something together, zoot it off to the client and then voila – they are done! As an example, we are waiting to put an order of customised card decks into production – not a complicated job – not in design or setup, but I have had to send this job back to the clients designer over 5 times now in the last 24 hours because of errors that they simply could not be arsed to correct.

No seriously, I mean what the hell!

Are they just lazy?

Well they aren’t very smart at being lazy I will say that much, because if doing as little work as possible was their objective, then they clearly didn’t do the math on how the variables add up when comparing the route of doing something correctly the first time round VS having to ping pong it back and forth a million times over… DOH!

This lack of general enthusiasm and basic work pride is prevalent in industries all over, but the reality is that it stems from the individuals themselves and until they change that attitude within themselves, nothing else will change.

Well that is my opinion anyway.

Don’t underestimate the importance of commitment.

Until next time...

Much Love from Cape Town, South Africa xxx

I think we're pretty similar in the way we think.
And yes, I have OCD too, this is a great advantage in your work.
You can not ignore every little detail that does not sit right.
Not everyone "sees" it like as (OCD).
This disorder, also makes me frustration many, many times,
Especially on the same things you wrote about them here.
there's nothing to do, this is a part of us and it is part of who we are and inseparable should learn to live with it.

Not all the people, come to work, most of them only go to work, because of the money.
When this is their goal, the quality of their work really does not matter at all (not for them).

Thank you very much for your post.
I know now that there is another person in the world who feels like me :)

hahaha so we are not as unique as we thought we were :P lol ;)

Yeah it can be VERY frustrating at times.... like most times... I mean ALL the time hahahaha!!!!

Thanks for the awesome comment hon x

Do you ever feel like you are trying to climb a greased pole? I ran my own real estate brokerage for over 10 years and some days I felt as if I was the only one working there. Many of my agents would never do more than they were required to do (no initiative) in order to succeed in the business. I mean they received huge commissions which you would think would motivate most people. Not. It always caused me to wonder why they were in the profession in the first place. Mediocracy kills me.

oh man I can SO relate in terms of people in general. Thankfully though, my staff are absolutely AMAZING and our customers ADORE them - but then having said that... I give them EVERYTHING I can and I do WHATEVER I can to make sure that our working environment is a positive one. They are my family, not my employees and that probably makes the difference...

but yes... for the most part.... greased pole!

Thank you @collinz :) Much appreciated

Excellent post! Showing pride in one's work is a testament to how much they value themselves as well as their surroundings!
