Coffee, Cans and Crafts

Though I have not actually "done" anything with the inclination yet... I have spent no shortage of hours exploring the "whats" and "hows" of what I could do. Whatever it ends up being - I know I will have enough "stuff" to work with when I get there! What am I talking about?! I am not entirely sure yet myself as you can no doubt tell... lol - but I want to start making new stuff with old stuff and that is about as far as I have gotten, haha!

Some time ago when I was busy working on that giant abstract portrait canvas, I bought myself two sets of acrylic pens. One set which has a 0.7mm nib and the other with a 3mm nib. Obviously not very practical for painting large surface areas, but absolutely fantastic for line and detail work - which is precisely what I used them for on that canvas. However, they can be used on pretty much any surface, as you can see by the rock and plant decoration I left at one of the places we visited on holiday a little while ago :)

So, I have been collecting all sorts of stuff - a lot of which is the jars and containers we use in the house... whether it is empty herb bottles, vitamin bottles, my face cream tubs and even our coffee containers, which are actually the most gorgeous air tight glass bottles!

... and just to quickly add (slightly off topic, but not really, lol) while on the subject of collecting used materials... I thought I would just mention this to any of you who do any kind of craft or art painting at home - it is something which my mom used to do for her art students. Paint palettes can be expensive when you paint on a regular basis, and my mom had lessons with five or more students almost fours times a week, so she started collecting the polystyrene bases which you get when you buy veggies and meat. They make absolutely fabulous throw away paint palettes and it is something which you will generally be able to collect fairly quickly... through your own usage and that of friends and family.

She also used to collect the large yoghurt and feta cheese tubs for the students to use as water cups to rinse their brushes while painting. Both easily accessible and a great way to extend their otherwise short shelf life.

Use it, don't use it.... anyhooo - back on topic (whatever that was, lol). I love intricate, mandala style pattern art and if I could just think of something to do with all these jars which incorporates that concept, then I can be on my creative way :) During my exploration of this, I have discovered several ideas which I absolutely love...

Obviously in terms of just painting the jars, the options are endless and I could pretty much do whatever I wanted, but I wanted to come up with some kind of purpose for the containers too. Something unique.

Something that would make the jars appeal to people (outside of myself obviously) - and there are so many ideas which have caught my eye, but I am just not sure if any of them speak loudly enough to me... They're nice ideas, but they didn't really get a WOW out of me :)

Along this journey of exploration for upcycling old jars... I found something that totally DID wow my little hippie heart, but it doesn't have anything to do with jars at all, lol - TYPICAL! And that was some genius who made garden / outdoor decor with these old cans!

Like seriously!!! How gorgeous! I could eat them up <3 So now, I have found something else I want to do and another thing I need to start collecting which will likely take a lot longer as we don't consume much from cans in this house... nonetheless, I will get there with a little help from my friends :) However, I still don't know how to combine these fantastical colourful acrylic markers and my ever expanding jar collection. Any suggestions? :)

❤❤❤

Until next time...
