A HALLOWEEN HORROR SEWER SCENE TO REMEMBER
While trick-or-treating, we discovered an underground horror scene like nothing I've ever seen. Read on to see it for yourself.
Perry Street, in the quiet suburban town of Kensington Maryland, is known for becoming "Scary Perry" on Halloween.
Each house on the block does extreme Halloween decorating in their yards and homes in spooky Halloween themes. This neighborhood fright fest has been taking place every Halloween for over 20 years.
With zero effort put into advertising of any kind, the crowds that flock to Scary Perry year after year are all due to word of mouth. The street was packed with people, all dressed in costumes of varying complexities, clutching bags and buckets to store their Halloween treats.
Out of the corner of my eye, I spotted people huddled around the curb in front of one of the first houses on Perry Street. Here's a view from the middle of the street.
And here are people laying down in the street to see something....under the street??
The gap between the curb and the street, where storm water flows during heavy rains and snowmelts, was bright strobing lights. Here's us getting closer to the light shining up from under the street.
And closer.
And as we approach, you can begin to make out what is clearly....
Pennywise the terrifying clown, from Stephen King's "It", a horror book-turned-movie that first aired in 1990 and was produced for the big screen again in 2017. Pennywise the clown is a bone-chilling child killer who lives in the sewers haunting the city.
And he's right here, along with some other terrifying critters.

That is so cool! I always loved the original It movie and use to watch it every Halloween. I love that someone did that in the drain. That scene in the movie was always so scary. Halloween has kind of died off here. People don't do big decorations anymore. It's a shame.
Yeah it's so creative and bold! I'm so glad to have found this street because our neighborhood is pretty tame when it comes to decorating too.
Now that's what I call a DEADicated Halloween enthusiast!!! That should be on your local news. Cool post @jaymorebeet.
Someone was telling me that they heard it mentioned on NPR during the local segment - apparently it's the 4th biggest halloween street party in the DC area!
That is truly wild. What a great idea. And SPOOKY too. The fact it's down in the underworld of the city makes it even more so. I'd love to check out that neighborhood on this night. What fun!! Thanks for sharing it with us, and making the classic discovery. Maybe I can fly there next 31st ( : Have a great rest of the Hallows eve night.
I can still hardly believe it - that this little sliver of light coming from the side of the street revealed this whole underworld! Meet you there next 31st!
It was an amazing find. Like a large-headed president bill in the blowing leaves.
I'll be there, if I'm not square. (What DOES that mean??)
That is pretty imaginative and very creepy! I’m not too far away and have never heard of Scary Perry. Looks like fun!
I hadn't heard of it until this year, and I also heard that a neighborhood in Bethesda does one as well - might check that one out at some point too!
Very cool!
Thanks - i agree 100% - i am so thrilled by the imagination. And while driving to work this morning I passed 2 other sewer storm drains with red balloons coming out of them. I would have passed them by without thinking twice but because IT was fresh in my mind, it had much more meaning ;) Silly marylanders!
Really cool. I'm glad to see people are still into Halloween.
Me too! I was starting to think that the whole trick or treating hullabaloo was dying down, but it seems that certain places do it up to the extreme, and everyone just flocks there!
