Camp Nou, (which means in Catalan "new stadium"), is a football stadium, located in the district of Les Corts, Spain. FC Barcelona has been the resident club since its inauguration.
With a capacity of 99,354 places, the Camp Nou is the largest stadium in Europe and the twelfth largest stadium in the world. This building is rated 5 stars by UEFA, which allows it to receive many international matches including several finals of the Champions League, the last being the final of the 1998-1999 edition.
The Camp Nou was built in Barcelona in 1957 by architects Francesc Mitjans Miró, Josep Soteras Mauri and Lorenzo García Barbón, after a particularly good time for FC Barcelona, ??symbolized by the performances of Hungarian László Kubala. It is originally called Stade des Corts (translation of Catalan Camp de Corts), known more commonly as Camp Vell ("old stadium" in Catalan). Its construction spans more than three years. Its reception capacity initially reaches 93,000 places. It is inaugurated on September 24, 1957 by a solemn mass and the blessing of the stadium by the Archbishop of Barcelona, ??Monsignor Gregorio Modrego.
The following years, the Camp Nou knows little change, except the opening of a museum of the club in 1984. In addition to the games of FC Barcelona, ??it is chosen as part of religious events as at the visit of Pope John Paul II (November 7, 1982), but especially cultural, with various concerts organized especially in 1988.
In 1993, 1994 and again in 1998, the stadium underwent further renovation works, which enabled it to meet in particular the safety standards set by UEFA. The capacity of the stadium is reduced to 98,772 places.
In 2000, FC Barcelona organizes a vote to change the name of the stadium. The most popular nickname Camp Nou is adopted as the new official name.
