Insomnia is a sleeping disorder which makes it difficult for a person to fall asleep or remain asleep. It's a situation where the brain refuses to fall asleep, and when the mind refuses to rest, the body suffers.

Insomnia is chronic sleeplessness which millions of people worldwide suffer from. About 2-4 out of 15 adults have insomnia. Effects of insomnia can be lethargy, drowsiness during daytime and even illnesses.

Majority of people do not take the inability to fall asleep seriously until it starts to tell on them. These symptoms can help determine if you have insomnia.

  1. Inability to fall asleep at night.
  2. Frequently waking up while sleeping at night.
  3. Waking up tired after a distorted sleep.
  4. Sleepiness during the day.
  5. Anxiety, irritability, and depression.
  6. Lack of focus and concentration.
  7. Frequent headaches.

Types of insomnia

Transient insomnia: This is when one experiences insomnia symptoms for three nights.
Acute insomnia: This is when the symptoms go on for weeks. It's usually short term.
Chronic insomnia: Chronic insomnia lasts for months, sometimes years.

Causes of insomnia

Many reasons can cause insomnia. Some ideas are psychiatric, medical and others can be due to habits. Some medical conditions which can cause insomnia include:
• Nasal Allergies
• Endocrine problems
• Asthma
• Arthritis
• Chronic pain
• Chronic back pain

Sometimes the medications prescribed for these health issues can cause insomnia.
• Sleep Apnea: This disorder is one of the major causes of insomnia. It occurs when a person's airway is blocked during sleep, causing them to wake up constantly throughout the night.
• Depression: Depression is a psychiatric condition which can lead to insomnia. Lack of sleep can also trigger depression. Therefore a person suffering from depression stands a risk of his/her situation worsening due to insomnia.
• Anxiety: Anxiety can cause difficulty in sleeping, and if it becomes frequent, the body will most likely get used to the pattern and distort it's sleeping habits.
• Lifestyle: A person's lifestyle can trigger insomnia, especially if it's an unhealthy one. For example, working late every night, long afternoon naps, making up for lost sleep and so on.
• Alcohol and Nicotine: Despite being a sedative, alcohol can disrupt your sleep pattern which can eventually lead to insomnia. Nicotine, on the other hand, is a stimulate which can trigger insomnia.

When you get to the stage of acute insomnia, it is advisable you see your doctor. Insomnia can be tackled immediately the source is discovered.
