This coming Monday is Memorial Day here in the United States. It is a national federal holiday set aside to honor the men and women of the United States Armed Forces who have given their lives protecting this country. That is important to our patriotic spirit but, honestly, I'd be lying if I said I look forward to the parades and memorial ceremonies more than I look forward to this weekend. Over the years the weekend preceding Memorial Day has become the (unofficial) start of summer. It is an opportunity for friends and family to come together and celebrate in the warm weather. Many state and national parks open this weekend and there will be many travelers on land and water. I love the cookouts! The air will be filled with the smells of barbecue and the summer salads will be flowing. The Memorial day weekend is my second favorite holiday bested only by Thanksgiving. Good food and good company make for good times. Period.
Anyway, find some way to pay tribute this Monday for those who have given their lives in fighting to preserve the way we live ours. As for this weekend, get them grills fired up! Good food and good times with friends and family is the recipe for fantastic memories. Build them strong while you can, they have to last forever. Everybody have a safe and happy weekend.
