The duel was in his younger years. It was even before he became a general. The bullet broke some bones and was lodged in Jackson's left lung. It was so close to the heart that they never removed the bullet. I have knee injuries from doing stupid stuff but I could never imagine living with a bullet in my lungs for almost forty years.
