How The Most Famous Texas Ranger Got His Start. Part 6

in #history5 years ago (edited)

Howdy folks and greetings from the Great Plains of North Texas!

We're on a short series about Frank Hamer, who was one of the best Texas Rangers who ever wore the badge, perhaps THE best Ranger.

Recap

In yesterday's post we talked about Frank Hamer and his captain trying to track down a murderer who had killed a local Del Rio, Texas rancher and was suspected to have killed a second rancher as well.

The suspect's name was Ed Putnam and the Sheriff was tipped off that he was occupying himself in the local brothel instead of trying to get out of town.

It made no sense but the boy wasn't known for his smarts.

Well, the Sheriff put 7 deputies and himself in front of the brothel while Captain Rogers, Frank Hamer, and another ranger named Hudson, went around back.

The girls were ordered out and one of them talked to Putnam and said he wasn't giving himself up.

This is Del Rio in about 1910:

Today's story

Evidently Putnam hadn't seen very many Westerns because at this point in the story, when the bad guy has no way out, he always grabs a girl and puts a gun to her head and demands a fresh horse or else she gets it in the head! lol.

And it's always a girlfriend of the Sheriff or Miss Kitty, or someone like that and that causes the Sheriff to back off until someone figures out how to distract him or make him let his guard down.

And he had a perfect opportunity to grab the brothel owner's daughter who went back in to try to get him to give up. But he didn't so his game was basically up.

Pressure was building

The Sheriff waited for 30 minutes and was getting impatient. Plus by that time about a hundred towns people had gathered and they were highly agitated.

Rumors were flyin that Mexican bandits had killed two local ranchers so they were ready to hang someone.

He needed to end this NOW

Well, not wanting to let the townspeople get out of control, plus being late in the evening and he'd already missed dinner, the Sheriff told his men to open fire. The first barrage of bullets wasn't that many, about 50 shots.

The Rangers waited patiently at the rear of the building, watching to make sure Putnam didn't make a run out the back.

Frank Hamer was behind a Hackberry tree calmly watching for any movement. He saw a curtain flutter in a window, then saw a six shooter appear.

Frank was armed with his trusty Winchester Model 1894 saddle ring carbine:

He took careful aim at the barrel of the six gun and fired one shot. There was a loud thud. The Sheriff and his men heard the thud but couldn't be sure what it was. So he told 'em to light the place up. You know, just to be sure.

The Rangers stayed quietly in the rear while the deputies turned the building into Swiss Cheese. They fired about 500 rounds into the wooden walls and through the windows, basically destroying the place.

After the dust and smoke settled the brothel was shredded. All the furniture destroyed. Even the legs of the stove were shot off. (no word on who paid for the damages).

I wonder if any of the deputies winced at having their favorite hangout destroyed? lol. Okay okay, that isn't fair. But just thinking of the odds and 7 deputies in that small town. I bet at least one of them liked spending time there.

Most brothels in the Western cowtowns were secretly protected by local law enforcement, even though brothels were illegal. The Sheriff and deputies got special treatment, favors, and discounts! But I don't know that to be the situation in this particular case.

As it turns out, Putnam had been crouching down when Frank fired his rifle, so the bullet entered just under his left eye, killing him instantly. Putnam was still grasping his six shooter when they found his body.

They also found a .32-caliber Winchester rifle and a newfangled German Luger semi-automatic pistol. In Putnam’s pockets the lawmen found 300 cartridges and $3,500 in cash.

Frank earned his spurs

Captain Rogers was so impressed with Frank's composure and dead aim that he gave Putnam's six shooter to him as a momento since this was his first gun battle as a Ranger.

Actually, I don't know how much of a battle it was, none of the accounts I read said anything about Putnam firing his weapons, I think he was just hiding in that back room.

Word came in later that day that the second rancher had been found shot dead, last seen with Putnam, so it was indeed a double homicide and Putnam was one sick dog.

The local photographer was there

His name was Noah Rose and he witnessed the shooting and invited the men to his studio to take photos, probably for the newspapers. Here's Frank Hamer(on the left) and the other Ranger named Hudson, that was guarding the rear of the house:

And here's a group photo with Captain Rogers seated and holding the Luger pistol that Putnam had, Frank is standing on the left side:

Back then and in the Old West, the newspapers always ran photos of the dead outlaws and that's what they did in this case, Rose also took a photo of Putnam's body.

Now, I normally don't show these kinds of photos but this is the most ungruesome dead outlaw photo I've ever seen.

So in keeping with the Old West tradition here's Putnam after he was shot:

Looks very peaceful don't he? Like he's about to break into a smile. In fact, he looks like someone that died in a brothel. lol.

Well, this was the start of a fantastic career for Frank Hamer who went on to become the greatest Texas Ranger in their history, his crowning achievement being the take down of the psycho serial murderers Bonnie and Clyde.

I'm getting ready to do a series on the incredible career of Frank, should be coming soon.

Thanks for reading folks, God bless you all!

Hey janton, does the town pay for another house that the sheriff and deputies shot to bits?

I was wondering the same thing, I don't know. I think they would have or a wealthy citizen would step up and provide the funds since those places were so popular. I needed old newspaper articles and I did find a service that has them archived from that town and year but it costs money to get the subscription so I haven't done that yet. lol.

Oh well, maybe we could leave it up to our creative imaginations. If they didn't build another house maybe the women moved town and if they did everyone was happy, haha.

I hope the young lady was not caught in the cross fire.

No, the only person shot was Putnam, so that's good. I'll eventually break down and get a subscription to that service that lets you access archives of old newspapers, it would really come in handy.

It would be but on the other hand it is a bit of a pain to pay for subscriptions.

Exactly. Like when they don't turn out like you thought they would and you can't get the dang thing canceled!

Howdy tomb0171! thank you, I'm glad you liked it!

All those bullets and destruction and he was only hit once! You do wonder if the women were able to rebuild. Often that was the only way they could earn an income.

Howdy Melinda! I assume they got help from someone to rebuild, I'm sure someone with money didn't want to lose the place! Very true about the woman, I've read many articles about how hard it was for woman to get jobs or make a living if they didn't have a working husband.

But your observation about only being hit once, yes..remarkable. I think he must have been crouched down behind a heavy piece of furniture or something because he only had the one shot.

Mornin’ Cowboy! The rangers always dressed nicely. They come out of a gunfight and looked like they were dressed for church.
Totally destroyed the brothel- some madam was out a lot of money.

Howdy redheadpei! Well, I wish I knew what happened to that place and if they were compensated by someone for the damages. I did find a sight that had archived newspapers from the local area but it costs money to access those so I didn't do it, probably need to for the future to get more details on some of these events.

As far as dressing, yes I'm impressed that they seemed to put a big emphasis on dress code!

Howdy Sir @janton, a great ending here and it certainly deserves an @ocdb
One would wonder with so many shots fired, after the thud was heard, how they determined whose bullet killed the badman.
Well done and I will wait for the series!
Blessings!

Howdy sir papilloncharity! well the Rangers saw Frank Hamer fire the shot from his rifle and then heard the thud, this was in a break when the other men in front were not shooting so that's how they knew for sure it was Frank's rifle. It was pretty obvious. Plus I'm sure they found the slug from the bullet because it went through his jugular and down through his chest into his arm and came out his arm!

I also reasoned as much Sir @janton, but over here 10 other guys would have claimed that it was their shot that killed the guy. Just made sure that you had the facts at hand, but you Texas guys are sharp Lol
Blessings!

Howdy today sir papilloncharity! I try to at least make sense with my stories but sometimes the details are sketchy. lol.

Howdy Sir @janton, typically Texan isn't it.
I mean the sketchy part Lol
Blessings!

What?? maybe. lol.

That guy even combed his mustache! That's a man that respect himself! hahahaha

That's true, his mustache was so big he had to comb it! lol.

Howdy steem-plus and thank you for the upvote!

Howdy Janton! So I read all three parts of this infamous Putnam ordeal, lol. Well, it wasn't funny then, but you sure made me laugh writing about it. On the serious note, Frank was definitely a good shooter and I was surprised when I found out that Putnam was shoot to death. I though he was maybe just injured. But he was really stupid poor guy, lol. And that last photo of him, OH MY GOSH!!! And here we are, making fun of the dead again, lol.

By the way, are going to write about Frank and Bonnie and Clyde?

Howdy Miss Lena! I'm glad you liked the story. I like it when the bad guys get what they deserve. Did you think showing that picture of Putnam was in bad taste? They used to plaster those photos, except usually alot more gruesome, all over the front page of the newspapers.

I just got the book about Frank Hamer today, his biography written by a historian, it's huge. lol. I haven't started reading it yet but I plan on doing a series about his life if it's a great book. and of course a big part of that book is the Bonnie and Clyde story.

Howdy Janton! I finally made it, lol. Why do you think the photo was in bad taste? Because I said we are making fun of dead? Well honestly, I don't know what God thinks about this, but the photo is funny and he was a criminal. So I think it's okay, lol.

Anyway, I am glad you got the book! Sounds like a fascinating story and I look forward to read your take on it 😊

Howdy Miss Lena! I didn't say the photo was in bad taste, I was asking if you thought it was. I think it's fine as it just went along with the story and it's what the Old West newspapers used to do.

I think parents would look at their kids and point out the dead criminals in the paper and say something like "see here what you end up like if you don't live right?"

Okay, Janton I just thought you were asking me, if I think it was in bad taste. But I was only kiding about it, lol.

Yes, I was asking you if it was in bad taste. So you think it wasn't or were you kidding about that part? lol.
