Birds in the CountrysteemCreated with Sketch.

howdy folks and greetings from the Great Plains of North Texas
where we are in the middle of what the local weather people call a
"cold front" I kid you not with temperatures only in the low 90s. It
does feel less hot but not very cold.

Anyway one of the "cool" things about being in the country is the fact
that we get visits from many different birds so I thought I'd give you a
few photos of a variety that we have here.

this guy flew in yesterday morning so I couldn't get a clear shot of
him with the sun behind him but he is definitely a hawk. They
normally aren't in our yard but in the surrounding trees, I'll get
better photos eventually.

these Turtle Doves are a delight to see each morning and I love
waking up to their cooing.

this white crane shows up several times a week and goes fishing

this big grey one stands about 4 ft tall and shows up most days. He
walks around the pond and stops motionless like a stature for
minutes at a time, I don't know if he's just watching for fish or
listening also but he always catches some.

ducks fly in several times a month and spend about 30 minutes
before they take off again.

these vultures are huge guys with wing spans of 4 or 5 ft, several
times they've landed on one of our lawns and congregated there
for awhile. They're everywhere down here in Texas and it's against
the law to kill them. The state wants them available to keep the
roadkill cleaned up and they do a great job of that.

I don't know what kind of bird this guy is but he's a handsome one
and stands about 15 inches tall.

our favorites of course are the Road Runners, here's one up on
our patio

We have many more beautiful birds that I haven't been able to get
photos of, I know, I need a better camera. That is coming so they
pictures will improve.

Thanks so much for stopping by, God bless you all!

the gentleman redneck

ps- ya know, you might just be a redneck if:

your home has more miles on it than your car!

Sort:

Love hose red headed vultures. We have the black vultures too and they are terrible. They are predatory. Will eat a calf or goat kid. I wish it wasn't illegal to shoot those! Great pics of birds:)

thank you Ma'am, it probably isn't illegal in Kentucky is it? if those things are around your farm I'd be practicing with the shotgun! yes, they're beaks are so strong that they can kill with those massive things! they can gang up on calves and kids, I know.

it's actually a felony here to shoot one, I don't know what happens if you hit one eating on something in the road, I know a guy who came up on one like that and it flew up, hit his windshield and went THRU the windshield into his cab! it was a mess! blood, glass and feathers everywhere.
thank you Ma'am!

You can get a permit to shoot 1. So that is laughable. DNR told us to shoot into the air to scare them off. So if that's the case just shoot into the air aiming right at their face! Oops! Lead poisoning....

hahaha! that's hilarious farmerswife, a new slightly more sinister side of you comes out, never seen before on those sweet videos you make! lol.
that there is true redneck talk! proud of ya. city girl gettin it done!
dang buzzards. ugly things. I wonder what you have to pay to have the pleasure of shooting one, what the cost of the stupid permit is?
and is their reasoning the same as here, that they want them to keep roadkill cleaned up? (FORMER city girl)

The black buzzard is something new here. We don't mind the red headed ones at all. You will see me shoot any kind of animal eating my animals lol I've come a long way. I used to be afraid of guns. Now I can use most of the ones we have. Except the 12 gauge shot gun...so I guess I'm not full redneck yet.
But even if we were to get a permit to shoot 1. That would do nothing when an entire tree is full of them watching your cattle birth...

wow! oh howdy first thefarmerswife...you guys have THAT many of those things, a treeful just waitin around to kill something? gotta learn the shotgun for those things.

Uncomplicated article. I learned a lot of interesting and cognitive. I'm screwed up with you, I'll be glad to reciprocal subscription))

Hi there @janton,
wow..... it can have a real wide wing spread. All of them guys are beautiful and unique from the rest <3 Good photography

thank you hananali! do you have such birds in Pakistan?

Everywhere @janton :) These beauties are everywhere in Pakistan <3

really? even the vultures? what about the Road Runners?

We have Indian vultures there, not really sure of the road runners am i guess we got them. And @janton look at this.....we have red necked falcon also :D :D :D

howdy today @hananali! oh redneck falcon! those falcons are awesome and the way people train them to hunt and so forth and then come back and land on their arm, very impressive and majestic looking birds!

That's what Arabs are best at, training and keeping falcons, I have even seen Saudi Arabian falcon having its own passport lol

wow! and those things go off, they fly off and hunt what? some kind of desert rat or something?

You seem to have pretty nice and green surroundings here @janton! Those vultures are some BIG birds, aren't they?

=^..^=

howdy there curatorcat! yes they are really bad boys. sometimes when we're out in the yard we'll a big shadow go across the lawn and we look up and there's one of those big suckers gliding along looking for some food!
did you post today? if you did I need to get over there.

Birds are beautiful @janton, so thank you for sharing.

I knew you would appreciate them angimitchell, thank you!

Nice collection of photos janton. Don't worry about the poor quality as I think they are just fine.

well I saw that guy jump on you about the quality of yours so I thought I better make it clear that they weren't that good! thank you sir.

I love the photos of the birds, but my all time favourite has to be that cute little roadrunner! It is hot and humid here too!

thank you so much cecicastor, yes I keep showing that photo because it's the only good one I've been able to get, they are too quick to catch in a pose.
but the weather should start getting cooler now shouldn't it? you guys have a winter season?

December to about mid-January it gets cool, about 75-80 degrees but we then get the trade winds...

oh ok, I understand. that place sounds a little too warm and humid to me, but you guys moved from Canada! wasn't that a weather shock?

I like the heat actually. It would be a bigger shock if you go from hot to freezing temperatures. I would make a very poor Inuit!

haha! well I think most people agree and why the migration from the North of the U.S. to the Southern states.

Love the photos @janton :) I thought that nameless one might be an egret, but I looked it up and it's certainly not. Back home on the West Coast, we have all kinds of hawks and eagles...they are so cool. I love the roadrunners you have there too! I have a couple of pigeons on my balcony every day, cooing me awake as well :)

Yes, I know, I've been MIA this week. The home front, well, really just Brian issues have kept me away. In all seriousness, now that he's not on steemit much at all, my time is better spent with him because he will be around for a much shorter time than steemit will.

lynn if I give you my email can we talk that way

yes of course. I'll give you mine. [email protected]

by the way, how did you look up a bird when you don't know it's name?

I knew the name of the bird, but didn't know what it looked like. Weird I know 😅

ok uh.. I think I need a redneck translation because I don't understand that.

I just meant that I always knew that "word" of a type of bird, probably from reading, but I never really knew what it looked like.

well well well...look who finally decided to drag herself back in and honor us with her presence.
hey I asked you a question about steemit in the email that I replied to, you best go read that. I was shocked at the results of the contest. I don't know how the figured Glen to be in 3rd place with that giant CL number, among other things.

Nice collection. The Road runner is awesome.

thank you sir, wait till I get a better camera with a more powerful zoom. we have more awesome birds out here.

Those are some bugs birds you have around your area! You know, they wouldn’t need vultures if people quick running over animals lol. I like the nice close-up of the roadrunner! P.S. It was 83 our today and it was hot.

howdy today @hebrewhousewife! haha..83 was hot! come on, it coudn't have been that hot at 83. was it so hot that ya'll just stayed inside all day to prevent heat stroke? lol.

i'll tell you what, for a rural area, we have the cleanest roads, you just never see roadkill unless it just happened. those ugly birds do a good job.

that Road Runner photo is great, the males only have that bright color on the side of their head during mating season so we're hoping that we'll have little road runners soon.
