Fires have led to extreme levels of air pollution in the San Francisco area. Experts say those little masks provide some benefits if you use the right one.

Masks can be a great protection.
A mask like on the photo is useless. It needs to be worn much tighter, and even than its only effective against dust. Harmful gases and the very fine smoke particles are not filtered out by such masks. For that you need a proper gas mask, which is rather expensive and uncomfortable to wear.
