What's a crypto wallet?

Step one, let's get ourselves a wallet. A wallet is simply two long strings made up of jumbled characters. These strings are called keys and they are the essence of your crypto wallet. To explain how this works, let's pretend our wallet is a locker at school. Every locker looks the same. Every locker requires a combination to open it.

When someone wants to give you money, you simply tell them your locker number. They can find your locker and stick the money in the slot. This is the public key. It tells people where to put the money. Note there is nothing dangerous about giving out your locker number. It's the combination you don't want to reveal.

To open your crypto wallet you also need the combination. This combination is your private key. If you don't have the combination, you cannot open the locker. If you lose the combination, there is no one you can go to to convince that locker is yours. This is your responsibility.

Notice how there is no banker in this scenario. You and your consumer control every aspect of your locker. You are the only authority for that money.
