Our Snowman. 24 hour short story

This my entry for @mctiller’s The 24-hour short story challenge

The following is the strangest story I had ever heard, I knew it while I was on vacation in a small village at the foot of the Swiss mountains

I was visiting my older brother. But the most peculiar part of the trip was to observe the neighbors' house. Although more than their house, it caught my attention was a snowman in their garden. But the strange thing was not that it was a snowman, I had seen thousands of these where I live, it is natural to have one in front of the home. But the most fantastic of all was that it was still completely whole, in July.

So I decided to know more about this strange phenomenon. I knocked on the neighbor's door and introduced myself.

"Hello! I'm Martha, I'm on vacation spending a few days visiting my brother's house, Mike Henderson. Your neighbor next door. "

Very cordially the neighbor invited me to come by and offered me a refreshing drink.

After a trivial chat time, I decided to ask about the snowman.

"Excuse me, but there is something that intrigues me. It's that snowman. How is it possible that it still stands and has not melted? "

The man laughed aloud. He was completely sure that I had come exclusively to ask that question, as well as many of the tourists who visited the town.

"Of course I can tell you the story, do you have time to listen to it?" He asked me

"Sure! I have only free time," I said smiling

And so, the neighbor began telling his story:

It was many years ago. I remember those days very well, I was a young boy. Everything happened after the biggest snowstorm we had ever seen. That night the winter had arrived earlier than usual and the next day gave us a snow day as we usually call it.

All the boys and girls were happy when we heard on the radio that there would be no classes that day. We could go out and play all day with the snow.

But when we went out to play, my sister and I found a strange girl lying unconscious a few meters from our house.

We ran to tell our parents about the strange girl. Immediately we put her in the house and covered her with blankets, as my father had indicated before he was going to look for the doctor.

We did not know how she had survived the cold of the storm. She wore light clothes, nothing compared to our warm jackets. Fortunately, she was still breathing.

She was a very pretty girl, with refined features and whose hair was a strange white color. We knew from her description that she was not from here. She had a big bump on her head, which we put ice on to make the swelling go down.

The girl managed to wake up before our father arrived. Regrettably, she had no memories of her past, including her name.

After the doctor examined her, he informed us that she suffered from amnesia, probably from the bruise received in her head. But he had to do more tests to ensure it. Other than that, she was in perfect health.

We welcomed her as another family member of the house, the days passed and we tried to make her stay as comfortable as possible.

Every afternoon we went into the forest to play with all the boys and girls of the villages. We used to go skating on a frozen lake. She loved playing in the snow with us. She made the most beautiful snow sculptures we had ever seen. My sister, on the other hand, loved to make snow men, but she always got angry because they always crumbled or melted.

We liked to play with the neighbors throwing snowballs and the most surprising thing was that our friend made snowballs faster than anyone and we always ended up being the winners. "The owners of the mountain," as my sister used to say.

One day, our father, as usual, went hunting along with two of his best friends. To his bad luck, he was caught by a snowstorm. When it got late, my mother met with the authorities and other neighbors to begin the search. The storm became stronger and the authorities recommended everyone to stay in their homes, as it was dangerous to leave in these conditions.

I took advantage of the uproar to sneak out and go in search of my father, even when it was against the orders of the authorities.

For my luck, on the way, I observed that someone was following me. It was her.

"I won't go back home until I find my father. Don't stop me," I said

"I won't. I'll help you find him," she replied

The further we went into the forest, the wind grew stronger, so much that it pushed us against a tree. I rolled downhill. My friend hit hard, but she didn't get hurt.

I panicked and thought it was better to go back, but by then I had lost my way back.

I went to where she was, my face showed concern. She read my mind and suddenly, she smiled at me. I calm down.

"Don't worry, I'm fine. Apparently, it was what I needed to remember who I am "

Suddenly she stood up and shouted

"Enough. No more"

With those words, the wind immediately ceased, as did the storm.

"Follow me," she told me

She started running through the forest and I followed her. She came to a clearing where there was a great creature I had never seen, it had four legs and a large whitetail. It roared fiercely at us.

"You've already caused a lot of damage to these townspeople," she shouted.

The creature immediately fell to the ground and its size was reduced to that of a kitten.

"Go in peace and do not ever disturb my friends"

The creature disappeared. Then the road lit up to the place where my father and his friends were. They were sheltered inside a crack in the mountain.

"You can get out now, the storm has stopped," she said.

Finally, we returned home safe and sound.

The next day, she thanked us for everything we had done for her and told us that she had already recovered her memory. And that she should return to her kingdom or something like that.

My mother thanked her for her help in saving me and my father.

Before leaving, she gave my sister a gift. Between the two of them, they created a big snowman and then she whispered in my sister's ear.

"Don't worry, it will never melt," she winked and then said goodbye to all of us.

"And to this day it has never melted." Finishing his story

I didn't know whether to believe or not in what he just told. Without realizing it, it had already become dark.

"Wao, awesome story of that snowman," I replied

"Thank you very much for your cordiality. Look at the time! I'd better be going," I replied

"Don't worry, we're always friendly with strangers," he replied

And before I left I noticed an old polaroid that was over the fireplace, which left me speechless.

"Yes, we took it before she left," replied the gentleman.

Finally, I went back to my brother's house thinking whether or not the story was true.
