The Jacques Cousteau Odyssey

The library where I work has several DVDs from the Jacques Cousteau Odyssey, a series of educational programs on oceanography, archaeology, nature, and exploration. I think it was broadcast in 1978, although it may in fact contain material gathered over several years.

Cousteau was the co-inventor of the aqua-lung, or SCUBA gear. He was a pioneer in underwater archaeology thanks to the technology he developed and its ability to expand what could be done underwater. The show details some of his technological tools such as stereo cameras and aerial photography, both of which required film, development, and often painstaking mosaic assemblies of multiple images. I would love to see what he could have done with modern technology like drones, 4K HD video, and GPS.

The shows exhibit the flaws one would expect from the available cameras and film, but I can forgive audio and video deficiency here. The content is stellar. I also have a feeling of nostalgia, because while I was not born yet when this first aired, I do remember seeing such shows re-run on TV from time to time. I also can't help but admire Cousteau's technological genius and adventuring passion.

We may live in an age of multiple hi-def cable/satellite channels devoted to nature programming, but this material still holds its own. Take a look for it at your local library!

He was an amazing discoverer of the oceans!

Little Factoid: "Born on June 11, 1910, in Saint-André-de-Cubzac, France, Jacques Cousteau co-invented the Aqua-Lung, a breathing device for scuba-diving, in 1943. In 1945, he started the French Navy's undersea research group. In 1951, he began going on yearly trips to explore the ocean on the Calypso."

Any friend of Jaques Cousteau is a friend of mine...

I grew up on his articles in National Geographic magazine. I dreamed of his adventures. I designed underwater houses and restaurants. J.C. - he da' man!

😄😇😄

@creatr

Thank you for pointing him out to a generation deficient in his wisdom...

sounds interesting, however I am nut sure it is translated to dutch.

Do you speak French? I would be surprised if his work is not available in French.

Upvoted and also resteemed :]
