Day 883 (Daily Post)

in #writing7 years ago

Day 883. I should probably quit relying on the weather reports being accurate especially in regards to the 'extended forecast' but lately it seems like even a forty-eight hour forecast is highly suspect. It could just be that the micro climates in the mountain valleys tend to vary widely or that the weather is just getting a bit unpredictable but either way it is getting a bit tricky lately to know when I need to conserve electricity and when to plan my outdoor activities. Fortunately my lifestyle accommodates a good bit of flexibility but the part of me that likes to 'plan ahead' gets a little annoyed along the way nonetheless.

Anyway it is a cloudy/sunny morning and once again there is a bit of a chill to the air but perhaps it will not persist throughout the day like it did yesterday when I found myself wearing a toboggan, sweat pants and a sweater the entire day and also found myself feeling a bit chilled every time that I went outside and exposed myself to the rather brisk wind. It being the middle of June and all it definitely took me by surprise and I was glad that I had not packed away all of my winter clothes.

On a different note I have been seeing a lot of a plant that looks like Queen Anne's Lace growing around here lately and after doing a bit of research I think that it is actually Poison Hemlock. Last year someone showed me their trick for spotting true Queen Anne's Lace but I had no idea that it's lookalike was so poisonous. If gathering mushrooms over the years has taught me anything it is that I should always double (and even triple) check the accuracy of something's identification and always follow the golden rule of 'when in doubt throw it out.'

Mostly I was interested in that particular plant (Queen Anne's Lace) because I have been on a bit of a seed collecting mission of late so that I can plant a bunch of medicinal/edible plants at the next place that I move to and in this case I am glad that I was not harvesting something that I do not really want to propagate.

In hindsight I wish that I had collected more seeds during my time here because I will assuredly miss the growing season of some stuff with having to move and all but overall I have collected some things along the way and others are growing inside the pots that I have black locust trees growing in so that is kind of cool. One thing that really seems to grow well beside the black locust trees is mullein which in my personal opinion is not just a rather handy plant to have around but also I just think it looks really neat.

Well that's enough tedious phone typing for one morning and I am going to wrap this up, do the editing and all that jazz and get on with my day.

I hope that everyone is doing well (or well enough) and has a nice day/night and I will absolutely do the same.

This is my fundraiser to help me with moving expenses.

Thanks for reading!

I know we've commiserated about the weather forecasters and their fickle and unreliable nature, but I hear you! I always ignore the extended forecast because it is never accurate. I hope today turns out to be nicer than yesterday!

I have lots of poison hemlock around here too. It's horrible. I run into it when trying to put up fences for the goats, and even though someone told me they had read an article about hemlock not harming goats, an internet article isn't enough to convince me. Besides, I don't want to expose myself to it in the process!

Here's to a sunny day and full batteries for you!

I am finally getting some great sun today @goat-girlz!!! I was actually wondering about how poison hemlock affected goats as well and I agree that reading something online is not enough either! At least it is not Giant Hog Weed though which at first I was fearful that it was. That is some rather nasty stuff!

I had to look up giant hog weed. Yikes! It's definitely similar looking. Probably related. I don't know that I've seen it here. We have water hemlock, which causes similar symptoms to hog weed. It's not as deadly as poison hemlock but dangerous nonetheless.
