Jacob Goes Off Grid Day 20 Part 1
This is a video from Day 20 of going off-grid. I went 'off grid' five hundred and seventy-three days ago and it has been quite the journey since I got dropped off at this old fallow farm and built (continue to build) all my own infrastructure. I have been video documenting the entire process and have just recently begun publicly sharing some of the videos. I have been sharing the videos privately since I started the entire process which I call Jacob Goes Off Grid In The Woods. 'Day 1' is the morning after I arrived at this little place in the mountains in the 'dead of winter' on January thirteenth of two thousand and seventeen with my dogs, my wits, minimal gear and very little hard currency to work with. Slowly I have done my best to breathe life into a very old farm and give it all my best, 'learning as I go', and documenting the process as best I can. In this video I show the solar panel and deep cycle battery that I got the day before and show my improvised wiring for it.
I also show the new fire pit that I started previously working on. I eventually call it 'the fire cave'. I use a lot of the stones that were falling off the cob chimney for it's construction. I also show the materials that I found for use as a grate inside the fire pit.
I talk about how one of the drains (for the pit in the shack) got clogged and how I get it to keep draining. I also mention how useful the sand/clay/gravel mixture coming from the drain is akin to cement and some of the things I can use it for.
I talk about the big 'useful junk' pile I have created and how the rain has washed it off enough that I can begin sorting through it.
I show where I have mounted the Baygen Freeplay near the ceiling inside the mini-shelter so that I don't have to go outside of the shelter at night to crank it. I also show how I have the rest of the mini-shelter setup inside and the vent at it's rear. I also explain how I stop the condensation occurring from where the front wall of the mini-shelter only has an air gap as it's insulation.
As always this is just a summary of the video's content and not meant to explain everything that I cover in the video.
