This is a video from Day 10 of going off-grid. I went 'off grid' five hundred and seventy days ago and it has been quite the journey since I got dropped off at this old fallow farm and built (continue to build) all my own infrastructure. I have been video documenting the entire process and have just recently begun publicly sharing some of the videos. I have been sharing the videos privately since I started the entire process which I call Jacob Goes Off Grid In The Woods. 'Day 1' is the morning after I arrived at this little place in the mountains in the 'dead of winter' on January thirteenth of two thousand and seventeen with my dogs, my wits, minimal gear and very little hard currency to work with. Slowly I have done my best to breathe life into a very old farm and give it all my best, 'learning as I go', and documenting the process as best I can. The audio in this video is muffled at first but then gets louder. I think it was because the cuff of my jacket was covering the phone's microphone.
In this video I show the hand-crank generator that I made using an old eighteen volt cordless drill and a tent stake and piece of black locust that I fashioned into a handle to operate as the crank. I also show the Baygen Freeplay and how I have a female USB port wired to it so that I can plug into it and charge my devices.
I also show how I create an air-gap in the front wall of my mini-shelter using plastic because I ran out of cellulose insulation. I also show where I drove a ring-shank nail into my thumb during the construction process and how I got blood all over the interior of the wall. I jokingly call it 'bear bait' because it could potentially attract a bear to the scent of the blood.
I also talk about how I keep running out of battery power for my cordless tools and have to cut corners and improvise because of it because the cold weather is coming in rapidly and I just need to get the mini-shelter as sealed as possible. I also talk about how I was planning on having the generator as backup power and how without it my mini-shelter is taking me much longer to construct than what I had anticipated.
I also explain what materials and fasteners that I used in constructing the panels that comprise the mini-shelter.
As always this is just a summary of the video's content and not meant to explain everything that I cover in the video.
