Honest with Yourself?

Honest with Yourself? What an interesting concept that is full of meaning. But unfortunately it has become a rather blanket statement and has over saturated the market. Most people have a rather narrow view of what honesty means to them. But is honesty really that important to a productive society or even a successful life?

Many would say no and yes. However, in order to truly be an honest person in society you would need to be honest to yourself and not to others. What would an honest person to do in a society where honesty was not respected? It seems silly to me to tell a lie when you can tell the truth. The two words honest and truthful are used as if they are one in the same, almost as if they were interchangeable.

So why would a person lie to themselves if they were trying to build a better place for everyone? If someone truly is honest they would be honest to themselves first and then to others. If this were practiced in all walks of life, then wouldn't the world be a much better place?

A real honest person would take the time to think before they acted and would consider if there really was a good reason to do what they were doing. They would be honest with themselves about the consequences of their actions. They would be honest with those they trusted and would not trust lightly. People who have integrity know that their actions have long-lasting consequences and hopefully others will emulate these types of individuals in their lives as well.

In society, we only see the dishonest for what they are and sometimes it is hard to see that the honest person is the same as the dishonest person. But if we could all choose our honest counterparts we would surely find that they can be as successful as the other persons in their particular field. Maybe we need to rethink how society judges its 'winners' and maybe we should all just get along with the ones that we have to work with or love. Sometimes it is those people who do the right thing and help others.

When was the last time you heard someone say, "That is such a downer" or "Wow that is such a cliche". Most people would look at them and say, "What, are you trying to say that only the dishonest people are the downers or the cliches?" Perhaps we need to have more adults in our society that are honest, and teach them about character and ethics instead of destroying their credibility because they are being too truthful. Please consider all this in 2021.
