How I Present/Market Steemit When Talking With Friends.

in #steemit7 years ago (edited)

When I talk about Steemit with friends, first and foremost my mindset is:

“STEEMIT IS A SOCIAL NETWORK” (social media)

steem_mug.jpg

Sure the “$” aspect does play a role in it and for many all they see is the “$”, but in reality no matter what the value of the STEEM & SBD may be, STEEMIT.COM is a SOCIAL MEDIA SITE (PORTAL).

Maybe I should be concentrating on the “$” side of things and doing the old lets make a million in a matter of days type of song and dance, but what happens when people do not make a million in a matter of days? What happens when people realize that making money anywhere on this earth entails a lot of effort and persistence?

So to me it seems a lot more logical to concentrate on presenting (marketing) Steemit.com and not the “STEEM & SBD” (“$”) aspects. This way the “$” aspects become added benefits, something they didn’t have on the social media sites they were on before!

If you get my drift!

Social networking has become the rage over the past decade, to many it still seems to be just a place on the internet where people spend a lot of their time, practically doing nothing. To those people the “$” could be the point about Steemit.com that makes them look at our portal differently!

Once people whom I talk to realize that social media sites are actually an activity that has a purpose in life, their attitude changes!

Now you can see why it is important that people understand that Steemit.com is a Social Media Portal and not just a “$” making machine, that is if we are looking at Steemit.com as a long term project and not just a wham bam thankyou mam, take the money and run type of gig.

So here goes:

HOW I PRESENT STEEMIT.COM (A SOCIAL MEDIA SITE) TO PEOPLE:

Steemit.com, as so with other social media sites can be looked at as being a online home, YOUR WALL IS YOUR HOME, YOUR STREET ADDRESS ON THE INTERNET!

One of the toughest things to explain to people is that social media sites are not like news portals or photo/video posting portals which serve a specific purpose. Social media sites provide us with a PLACE TO CALL OUR OWN!

This doesn’t usually do the job when presenting Steemit.com, so I give people an example that they can relate to, something that has to me at least proven to be a 100% foolproof way of explaining things, I tell them to look at their email as being their PO BOX, a place where they open up their PO BOX and collect their mail, look through it and do what needs to be done. If they get a parcel in their PO BOX with a photo album or some items that they want to show all their friends they then call over their friends and show them or wait till their friends visit to show them.

Everyone understands that parallel!

Then I just add the following:

If your email is your PO BOX then your wall on a social media site is your address.
This is where you see the looks on their faces change, this is where you have them understanding what it is all about!

It is at this point where they fully understand how a social media serves a family and friends!

To those that are more business orientated, well, it is here that a real challenge is faced. Most people who are in business have set views on social media from what has been presented to them by others and from what the other social media sites have put in place through their trials and errors over the past decade. So these people can be tough little bickies (cookies) to crack!

The good thing about all this is that in the past decade we have all heard of people who have made big dollars, some even fortunes via social media sites. As much as this may be a point that we all know I consider it to be something that does not need to be brought up in a conversation as to most of the people I speak to they look at this as something that they will never be able to achieve. I sometimes think that they would put their money on a lottery ticket thinking that they have more of a chance to win the lottery than to make some serious dollars on the internet.

So this topic needs to be approached literally on a 101 level. If you don’t know anything about the persons business it is fair to say that you won’t be able to get into their mindset, it shall be hard to communicate on a 101 level as you are disadvantaged. However, don’t let this discourage you, my experiences have shown to me that we can still talk about things as people and in doing so I actually learn a lot about their business and the way they see their business and its capacities and potential. It is wonderful to listen to people when they open up about their business dealings and relations, an entire new world with every individual I speak to.

One of the things that I have concluded is that using the example of what a newspaper or radio or even a TV ad were, that this is what the internet offers. Just like with a newspaper (as an example) if you put your ad in the wrong part of the paper you shall have zero results.

This has in most cases (to me at least) shown to be one of the best ways of explaining things to people.
So it is at this stage where I see the looks on their faces change, as now they understand what I am saying.
Again, with everything that was said earlier in the intro, this nails it.

The rest is all about them talking about their business and how they don’t see it being necessary to be on the net, or how they didn’t see it as something that could help them. Then it is here that I go and state how they don’t have to pay for web pages and web designers etc etc etc (no offense to the people who live off these types of services).

They don’t need to employ a programmer or computer whiz kid to manage their wall on a social media etc etc etc. That is my closing line and then I go ahead and state how they can in the evenings reply to any comments or questions, directly interact with potential customers and show the world that they are real people doing what they do and that they care about the people they do business with. Without paying for all the tv ads and no having to go on some talk shows etc. The savings are huge when I present it like this.

It practically doesn’t cost them a cent, but it does mean that they need to invest a bit of time each day into their wall (their place of doing advertising the business online) and communicate with the people who are interested in what they are doing!
Something that they do anyways whenever interacting with people who walk through the front door of their place of doing business, this is their front door of their place of presenting their business online.

THEN THERE ARE THOSE WHO WANT TO OPEN A BUSINESS!

It is these to whom i present the examples of people buying and selling things via social media sites and not using the well known of auction sites and classifieds that we have all heard of (not to mention them).
This works for most of these types of conversations, as they are looking for a way to become independent and what better way to do this than to do it on THEIR OWN WALL!

No big brother setting the rules of how they go about their business, setting fees and so on..... and then the “$” bonus about Steemit.com, this just nails it when talking to people looking at starting something up but who don’t quite know how to go about it.

THIS IS ONE OF THE KEY MOTIVATIONS FOR:

CONCLUSION.

Basically when I present Steemit.com to people I try to adapt to them, I try to ensure that they fully understand why this social media portal/site is the site that shall serve their needs and ofcourse I use the “$” bonus here as a point that puts us above the rest. We offer what no one else offers as a bonus, not as a foundation, but as a bonus!

I WOULD LOVE TO READ ABOUT HOW YOU PRESENT STEEMIT.COM TO YOUR FRIENDS.

I like the way you approach the subject of selling Steemit to your friends and you have given me very useful pointers. The most common question I get is: "Where does the money come from?" Or :"Who is going to pay me for my ideas, I don't really have that much to offer". Your approach makes a lot of sense, I also consider Steemit to be mostly a social media site with benefits. Being able to air your views and ideas to like minded people, making new friends along the way and marketing a product you believe in, these are great pluses in my book. Will I will ever make a lot of money? I think if you dwell on that aspect, it shows up in your posts. Steemit should mainly be for fun in my opinion.

Sharing thoughts, ideas, experiences has helped me learn from others, both from them sharing and responses.

So this here is to me a normal way of becoming a better person, better at what I am doing and in the process maybe helps others too.

I like people who are postitive thinkers, like yourself, in this world today it is hard to find positive attitudes, yet here on Steemit it seems that just about everyone is positive, that to me should be listed as one of the wonders of the modern world.

I really liked this post. I think your attitude is spot on and helping people to see the bigger picture is key, especially for wide eyed newcomers who are probably struggling to both wrap their heads around the differences of this platform and all the potentials it holds. I also wrote some posts on this issue when I first got here, but I think you take it further.

Hope that adds some sense of the things I am noticing here. I also just saw this post yesterday that I think people need to see if they are already using video in their content, it is by @paulag , who also has a good perspective on Steemit, imho

Originally from Melbourne, worlds most liveable city, what ever that is supposed to mean!

Great stuff, so many people here see the potential growth of this portal, a lot of positive energy.

As far as the selling points, my attitude is that we can use the existing platform, no adjustments being made, as people on fbook and instragram did.

all in all, great to see that people are looking at Steemit as a long term project and not just a once off thing!

You are an ambassador of Steemit.com. Your explanation can persuade one to join. One should get information first you will utilize in social life, then money is an added benefit.

Just saying it as I see it.

Thanks Jackmiller for the upvote. May God bless you.

I am Groot! :D
