Funny signs around Thailand

in #thailand6 years ago

As usual, I want to point out that I am not trying to make fun of the country for attempting to make their signs bi-lingual. Those of us that live here and are not fluent in Thai (which is basically everyone) are very fortunate that the signs event attempt to be in English at all. I have been in other Asian countries were there is no attempt to have English (let alone other languages) on their signs and this can be a very confusing experience. Therefore, I applaud their attempts and most of the time you can figure it out based on context anyway.

It doesn't mean it can't be funny.

I think it is quite obvious that the owner of this shop does not want you take photos but the manner in which it is written only encourages people to do just that. This particular shop was selling shark fins so fuck 'em.

I don't know if someone copy and pasted the wrong thing from the translation app, but i suspect they copy and pasted the wrong thing from the translation app. I do not know what it says in Thai but seeing as how it is a roadway I suspect that it wasn't meant to say "vocabulary."

This one actually requires no language and it is a very effective method of getting the point across. As someone who has been around deer in the past though, I have never seen them go full Bruce-Lee on someone near them. One thing is for sure though, a territorial buck will definitely clean your clock in a street-fight.

So you sell food then do you?

Mostly when I am going to an Indian restaurant it is kind of understood that they are going to have a wealth of veggo options, but just to get the point across a bit more they are quite specific at Fusion India in Chiang Mai. I ate there and it was pretty great so don't punish them for their silly sign

I can't take credit for having found this one but you really don't have to look very far to find these sorts of mistakes on Thai menus. All you have to do is go to a smaller mom and pop shop and you are all but guaranteed to find a treasure trove of bad translations. These two I actually can read in Thai and I have no idea how they managed to translate "Indian yellow curry with prawns" into "the shrimp cooks whore dust." I suspect it is because there is a word that sounds a lot like "ga-ree" that is slang for prostitute or so i have been told. I'm not really up to speed on slang because using it incorrectly is a wonderful way to get yourself into trouble.

If you have any signs from Thailand or really anywhere else in the world i would be delighted to see them.
