February 13, 1806 was born Vladimir Alekseevich Kornilov (1806-1854) - a famous naval commander, vice-admiral, hero and chief of the defense of Sevastopol in the Crimean War of 1853-1856.

The defense of Sevastopol is the most important part of the life of Vladimir Alekseevich. Prince Alexander Menshikov, Commander-in-Chief in the Crimea, ordered to withdraw troops, and the ships of the Russian Navy flooded. But Kornilov refused to follow this order: "Stop it! It's suicide ... what you force me to ... that I left Sevastopol surrounded by the enemy is impossible!".

Kornilov was removed from his post and was ordered to go to another duty station (in the city of Nikolaev). But Vladimir Alekseevich did not obey. Vice Admiral Kornilov organized the defense of Sevastopol and died on the battlefield, defending the city.
