Go big steps ? or small ones? - Fights

Some people prefer to hire enormous armies, and go for big loots...
But they freak out when they go to sleep, will their army survive the night?

On my side, as I got several armies already been wiped out, I prefer to climb smaller steps, and have a good sleep without nightmares ;)
