St. Sava's Day - school holiday
St. Sava's Day or Savindan, is dedicated to the founder of Serbian Orthodox Saint Rastko Nemanjic, the Enlightener and the first Serbian archbishop, to a man who voluntarily renounced the earthly authorities and became a monk. This holiday is one of the largest family holidays. It is proclaimed as a school holiday.
St. Sava, born as Rastko Nemanjić, was a Raška nobleman from the ruling Nemanjić family.
Rastko Nemanjic, the son of the great Serbian Mayor Stefan Nemanja, was born in 1169. As a young man he craved for spiritual life and therefore he fled to the Holy Mountain in Atos.
Rastko, who took the monastic name Sava, made the independence of the Serbian Church, and became the first Serbian archbishop.
He traveled twice to worship the holy places in Jerusalem and the Holy Land. He made peace among his brothers when their father died and they fought over the rule, was. While creating the Serbian Church, he simultaneously created the Serbian country and culture.
