Cerbera odollam is a plant species in the Apocynaceae family and is commonly known as the Suicide Tree, Pong-pong, and othalanga. This tree is from India and south Asia region. Generally grown in swamps near the coast, but there is also a make decorative plants love it this tree is poisonous and dangerous for you who keep it.
So called because this plant produces a powerful poison that can be used for suicide and killing. When consumed, the fruit, leaves, sap and seeds cause heart problems that lead to death.
The content of cerberin and glycosides contained in the seeds of the fruit affect the workings of the heartbeat, so the heart's performance so chaotic. Usually also, suicide Tree fruit is used to kill because the poison content is very difficult to trace, even if the coroner performs an autopsy on the corpse.
Cerbera odollam has a resemblance to oleander, another poisonous plant of the same family. The twigs are circling above the tree trunk, the leaves are very dense with a tapered form. This plant also produces white sap.
The fruit, while still green, looks like a young, young mango, its fibrous skin. Its seed, when it is flowering, measures about 2 cm x 1.5 cm. When exposed to air, the white Seed Tree seed turns purple, then dark gray and finally brown or black.
The fatal dose of toxins contained in one Cerbera odollam seed causes death within 1-2 days. Symptoms generally include burning sensations in the mouth, severe vomiting, irregular respiration, headache, irregular heartbeat, coma and ultimately die.
