アイザック・アシモフは、三大SF作家のひとりだ。

研究者・技術者の中には、「ロボット三原則」と聞けばピンとくる人もいるかもしれない。そう、ロボット三原則は彼の作品のなかで提唱されたものだ。

彼は、SFに限らず多方面で活躍していた。今回読んだのは、有史以来の化学の歴史を時系列でまとめた作品「化学の歴史」である。

どこでこの本と出会ったかは忘れてしまったけど、「教養として読むべき○選」 みたいなまとめからみつけた気がする。

僕は特に化学は専門教育をうけたことはないし、「周期表と化学式は学校で習ったなぁ」「危険物取扱者乙4類の資格取得のときになんか勉強したような気がするなぁ」そんな程度だ。

この本は、古代から始まる。人は、自然とともに生活していた。そこには、物質の性質が変化するようなことが起きることがあった。例えば、落雷による火事で木が炭になった。

そして、火をコントロールできるようになると、料理をした。肉や野菜はやわらかく食べやすくなった。
