Do not miss it: Berlin Science Week! Starting NOW

in #science9 years ago (edited)

Get acquainted with some of the coolest developments in the scientific field, directly from the source! Again, that time of the year to get your geek on has arrived, so prepare yourself to immerse in some sweet, sweet science.

Berlin Science Week creates and opportunity to bring everyone who is interested in science together: the general public, students, children, hobbyist experimenters, creative people, policy makers and scientists themselves converge in these series of events taking place starting today and running until the 10th of November.

Panel discussions, exhibitions, science-infused art installations, entertaining science talks and workshops are some of the things you can expect. You can view the full program on their official website, but I have selected some interesting highlights for you, that I will share here. All of them are free, unless stated!

My top recommendation: Science Beyond Borders – Science Festival

Museum für Naturkunde, 6 Nov, 5 pm

PUBLIC | ENGLISH (REGISTRATION REQUIRED - WEBSITE)

Organizer: N² - the Network of the Networks (Max Planck PhDnet, Helmholtz Juniors and Leibniz PhD Network)

Enjoy science in poetry, design and performance! Under the motto “Science Beyond Borders”, we invite everybody to join our science festival at the Museum für Naturkunde. Beyond borders to us means to think out of the box: How can science be seen from different perspectives? How is science connected with art? Is science art in itself? We are a group of enthusiastic young scientists – from infection biologists, psycholinguists, solar cell physicists, polar explorers, historians to deep-sea researchers.

We are happy to share our research with you! Connect with us in the cozy science lounge, take a look at beautiful art pieces of the “Beyond Curie” project and learn about „Knowledge Link through Art and Science (KLAS)”. Get inspired by our guests Dr. Sam Illingworth and Dr. Sascha Vogel, who will challenge the boundaries of science.

This event is organized by N² – the Network of Networks comprising Max Planck PhDnet, Helmholtz Juniors and Leibniz PhD Network. It is embedded in a conference that inspires young researchers to communicate their scientific findings to the public.

I will personally be taking part in this event, both as a member of the audience for the talks and as a participant talking about my scientific topic and explaining my project during the poster session to anyone interested! So come and say hi if you are curious :-)

Please look for “Public Event” on www.n2jointevent.de and register online. There will be a small admission fee of 5€ to cover refreshments in the evening.

Science Slam in the Planetarium

1 Nov, 8 pm

PUBLIC | GERMAN Organizer: Zeiss-Großplanetarium

ENTRANCE FEE: 8 € / 6 €

Experiencing science as it unfolds: At the Science Slam young scientists explain their research projects in short 10-minute-talks that are entertaining and easy to follow. The scientists leave their laboratories and lecture halls to present the fundamentals of their own research projects at the planetarium.

The important thing is not primarily the scientific outcome of their work, but to explain it in an understandable, entertaining and concise way. The audience is the judge and jury, using numbered cards for voting. At the end of the evening a winner is chosen.

Falling Walls Conference: The International Conference on Future Breakthroughs in Science and Society.

9 Nov, 9 am

PUBLIC | ENGLISH

Organizer: Falling Walls Foundation (REGISTRATION REQUIRED - WEBSITE)

More than 20 outstanding researchers from around the world and a wide range of disciplines convene to showcase their scientific breakthroughs in their respective fields of research – in 15 minutes each.

Inspired by the peaceful fall of the Berlin Wall they are answering the question: Which are the next walls to fall? And how will that change our lives?

Speakers and subjects are rigorously reviewed in collaboration with leading research institutions. Topics range from medicine to high technology, from science to the humanities.

Interested? If you are in Berlin, don't miss this chance to immerse in some fascinating ideas!

Cheers,

Irime
