What does it mean to be a night owl?

Are you more productive at night?   After the city goes to sleep? I think I know why..

Most programmers have had those late night coding sessions that are really productive. This is often because they have an opportunity to focus on their work undisturbed.

Did you know, there is a lot more noise in the world than noise that you can hear?

Our human ears can only hear between  64-23,000 Hz.

Many people haven't heard the term, but infrasound is known as sound waves less than 20 Hz that are inaudible to our ears.  Diesel engines often make this sound (even if you can't hear it).

Now we have wifi traffic running through the air at alarming rates.  Cell phone calls are being made within the same 5000 square foot radius of you on a regular basis.

When the city sleeps, so do the sounds.  The wifi/bandwidth traffic lowers to a minimum.  Frequencies, traffic noise, other disturbances all drop drastically during the night.  This helps our brains to focus and to concentrate.

Ever heard of a novelist who goes out into the country somewhere to write their book?

There is a reason for that..

I know I'm most productive at night after everyone in my family goes to sleep.  That is, of course, if I had a nap earlier in the day, so I will be full of energy after 11pm.

Are you a night owl?

Do you find it easier to concentrate and focus after 11pm at night?

Sort:

Absolutely. I prefer to be completely relaxed and tuned in. I definitely work better at night, though it's probably not very healthy. Sometimes the sun is coming up when I'm going to bed.
