After all a book can’t be judged by its Cover….

When passing through the familiar and unfamiliar faces, this colourful yet so unique face demanded for my attention. To be precise it was not a face, but a cover page. The first thing I saw was the pinkish dominance cover page but when I looked closely I saw that the cover page is a delicately formed navel of a woman and the pinkish background is her dancing costume. At first, I thought that it may not be a sort of a novel that I would read. But then again, something else caught my attention. The face of the woman wasn’t captured in the cover page! “Okayyy, this is getting interesting! Let’s go for the topic.” My mind ringed. The more I observed, the more it got interesting.”

“The Moon in the Water”. It was the title. Something about this title is it made me more curious to find the connection between the cover page and the title. It was time to go further in the book, instead of staring at the cover page.

“Look the moon in the sky, not in the water.” When I read this it was obvious that I was gonna buy it. that quote is fascinating itself. But I was torn between whether to agree to it or not. We should aim for the moon without indulging ourselves in its reflection on the water. But what if we didn’t want the moon? Its reflection on the water is unique itself and different from the moon in the sky, so what if we wanna look at it instead of the far away moon?

While pondering on that I skimmed through the pages, and the visual narration confirmed that I’m gonna buy this for sure. It engaged myself more to interpret what’s happening in the story as the letters itself were not enough, but we had to connect it to its visual representation.

It had been a really interesting Sri Lankan English novel by Ameena Hussein and it didn’t disappoint me even after reading it. I was glad that I skimmed through the novel, instead of thinking that it may not be a my sort of a novel by looking at the cover page. After all, it is true that we can’t judge a book by its cover.

Thanks for reading!
