Sadly, many people do not even know if they are victims of domestic violence.
And even more alarming… the perpetrator is unaware they are committing a crime.
Domestic violence, as well as physical violence, also includes regular threats or emotional abuse.

For example, if your partner is doing any one of the following, it could escalate to something worse over time:

  • Name calling, Teases you
  • Hits you… or hits walls… and says he loves you after – Big Red Flag!
  • Damages your property
  • Threatens to break-up with you; commit suicide or kill you
  • Stops you from seeing friends, family – having a social life – Big Red Flag!
  • Reads your phone, emails, FaceBook page, other social media
  • Easily jealous towards you communicating with anyone apart from him
  • Multiple personalities (one for you and one for social gatherings, events)
  • Controlling during Sex or forcing you to have sex when you’re not wanting it
  • Makes you feel like your “Walking on eggshells” with his anger and temper- Big Red Flag!
  • Secret bank account or preventing you from seeking employment

As a human-being you have the right to control your own destiny and journey through life. You are not a punching bag to satisfy another’s problem on society.

You have rights! And it is important for every victim of domestic violence to understand these rights.

Do you know someone who is a victim of domestic violence?
If you know a friend, colleague or family member that is currently a victim of domestic violence, you could be their only hope. The reality is that many victims of domestic violence are too scared to speak out; due to fear of being further abused by their partner; or judged by their friends. It can be a vicious cycle.

Are you uncomfortable with your partner’s demeanour?
Have you recently begun dating someone new? Are you a little puzzled by his demeanor? It is very important to recognise early signs of domestic violence. It is also important to understand that some people (due to their upbringing) may assume that certain behaviour towards women is acceptable.

I have been a victim of domestic violence. Should I date again?
It is great that you want to move on and look for Mr. right. Don’t rush into a relationship!

Sadly, many victims can replace one abusive partner with another. It would be recommended to speak to a professional to ensure you are ready. There is no harm in being single and beautiful and Free!
