She just walks around sniffing like that. She has a superhero level of smelling ability, so she actually "sees" the world more through her nose than through her eyes.

Homegirl let me tell ya....... I took my 110lb German Shepherd for a walk yesterday and this ninja wrapped himself around a mailbox post, started yanking back and slipped out his collar in which I had the leash on this time. I usually put on his harness but I was to lazy to deal with putting it on him cause it's always a damn fight to do it. Yeah........my buddy is very unruly. It took me an hour to get him back because every time I got close, he would run from me. 😠
LOL, my little 12 lb dog sometimes gets out of her harness and I can't catch her running after her, so don't even try anymore. I just call her back until she finally returns. Now where we walk I mostly leave her off leash. I find she actually obeys more when she is only responding to my voice, not any physical control.
German shepherds are really smart dogs, and dominant in nature. I've often wanted one because they're so smart and protective, but then I think about how much work it would be to stay alpha with them all the time, and always decide against it. Good luck!
They are a joy to have, I have owned 3 before this one and you do have to show them who is the big boss.
