The Holy Amarnath Yatra

in #travel7 years ago

It is all about instant salvation. No, no ... not at all like the Lord Budha type, but an ultimate way to immerse oneself completely in the pool of devotion.

Similar to thousands of Hindu pilgrims, I too enrolled myself for 2010's Holy Amarnath Yatra, which started on 1st July and ended on 24th August. I was a part of second batch of pilgrims in which 10,000 Yatris left Yatri Niwas at Jammu on the second day of the pilgrimage and proceed for Pahalgam.

There are many routes to reach Amarnath Cave but we chose the Jammu-Pahalgam-Amarnath Cave route to reach this holy shrine. Pahalgam is located on the banks of Lidder River, at a distance of 315 km from Jammu and can be accessed by taxis or buses. While traversing through this path, I witnessed some of the most intriguing valleys, steeped mountain ranges and snow-capped mountain peaks. Truly, it was a wonderful experience.

We crossed several destinations like Chandanwari, Pissu Top, Sheshnag, Panchtarni, while our journey. Chandanwari, located at an altitude of 9, 500 ft above the sea level and 16 kms away from Pahalgam. It is the first base camp, where we took our first halt and spend one night. Second day, after early breakfast we proceeded towards Sheshnag via Pissu Top. Sheshnag is situated at a distance of 12 km from Chandanwari. We stopped here for overnight stay in the tents.

Next morning, after enjoying some light breakfast at Sheshnag, we moved towards Panchtarni (12,729 ft) and took halt for overnight stay. Next day, we again began our journey for the Holy Cave of Lord Shiva. Finally, after such a tedious trekking we reached at the door step of pious Amarnath cave, which is located at 12,760 ft above the sea level. Inside the cave there are three ice stalagmite formations which are dedicated to Lord Shiva, Goddess Parvati and Lord Ganesha.

After viewing and worshiping the ice stalagmites, all my tiredness of the journey vanished. And then I started my return journey to Srinagar via Baltal. I am really thankful to Jammu and Kashmir State Government for arranging such a hassle free yatra and taking care of us through out the journey.
