Photo Time: Bonedi Barir Durga Puja

About two hundred years ago when Bonadi Bari, who was able to conduct the Durga Puja at their own capacity and didn't allow ordinary people to participate or even pip into the house of Elites.

Then a group of people all around in the locality organised a community Durga Puja which is now known as Sarbojanin Durgotsab where everyone can participate. Normally a voluntary donation is collected from the public. But nowadays the Government provides a good amount of grant and subsidised electricity. There are many corporate sponsors who also support for their advertisement and endorsement. As a result there is much competition among Sarbojanin Durgotsab. They used to create theme pandals and idols by famous artists from all over the world. A sphere of Los Vegas has been copied in a pandal and has a worldwide apparition.

While Sarbojanin Durgotsab are very dynamic and vibrant the Bonadi Bari Puja is very static and traditional where heritage is of the utmost importance.

I have been visiting such a Bonadi Bari Puja for the last thirty years where I have not noticed any changes in the idol. Such idols are Daker Saj Ek chala Thakur. Behela Roy bari started the puja around the 17th century at present Amarendra Bhavan.

The Idol of Durga is killing a demon that is mahishasur a demon who could take the shape of a buffalo among other things in fact he had a boon that ensured he would never be killed by a man or a god with this superpower he conquered.

Heaven and Earth the Divas poured in all their energy or Shakti to create a feminine formed Durga who would go on to defeat mahishasur.
