One Picture And One Story Week #61
Greetings friends of Steemit and Steem For Pakistan
Picture was taken on 11.10.2024 from Burrabazar, Kolkata
The howrah bridge will remain closed today from 11PM to tomorrow 4AM for inspection and load test by Experts of Indian Institute of Technology and Engineers of Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Port Authority (formerly known as Calcutta Port Trust). Such an examination was held 40 years ago. However last year Howrah bridge was closed for traffic for a few hours for repair purposes.
This is one of the rarest Cantilever, Truss arches, steel suspension bridge between Kolkata and Howrah Railways Station spanning 705 meters over the Hooghly river. The constitution of the bridge started in 1935 and was inaugurated on 3rd February 1943. It is one of the busiest and sixth longest bridges in the world. Wikipedia
It was also a matter of pride that indigenous Tata Steel supplied the high quality tensile steel for fabrication of the bridge by Cleveland Bridge & Engineering Company UK. They initially thought of bringing the steel from the UK.
Not only Howrah bridge has been portrayed in poetry and songs even in pop but also many celluloid makers also film the bridge in many popular movies.
The last time trams ran on Howrah Bridge in Kolkata was before 1993. It was a pleasant memory of crossing the bridge by tram which has been now replaced by underwater tube metro taking only 45 seconds to cross.
Once upon a time when all traffic led to Howrah station via the bridge before the second Hooghly bridge came up, it was really unpredictable to guess the time required to cross the bridge. Many people are seen running over the bridge leaving the vehicle in traffic jam in order to catch the train.
