According to This site, Corruption may be defined as a form of unethical or dishonest conduct by a person who is entrusted with a position of authority, often to acquire personal benefit. Corruption may include many activities including bribery and embezzlement, although it may also involve practices that are legal in many countries.

While growing up, there was a popular saying which goes thus "The Nigerian Police and twenty naira are like 5 and 6". Back then, Nigerian drivers always tried to ensure that they had a twenty naira. However, The police have come a long way since those times. I'm not trying to say that they no longer take bribes. Rather, they have increased the amounts they collect.

I was travelling to school some time back, when the bus I was in was stopped by a police officer. The driver immediately turned to face us and asked if any of us had a hundred naira note. A fellow passenger gave him and he placed the money between his driving license and presented it to the officer, who removed the money in it and simply waved us along. This is just a tip of the iceberg, as you can experience several crazy scenarios when dealing with the Nigerian police. Here are some memes that depict the Nigerian police.

And the politicians? It is almost like the country is cursed with the kind of leaders we get. Sometime back, the news of the former minister of petroleum, was all over the news with claims that she embezzled about $90 billion!! In a country where several people live on less than a dollar a day. What on earth could someone use that sort of money for?

Lest I forget, we have General Sanni Abacha, a past Nigerian head of state, who embezzled several billions of dollars and stashed them in various accounts around the world. Corruption and Nigerian politicians is just like fish and water, they are almost inseparable.

And the scandals religious organizations are involved in these days? It is not uncommon to hear of religious leaders diverting church funds for their personal purposes. Innocent Nigerians are taken advantage of daily as a result of their desire to please God. Almost all of their earnings are deposited towards the propagation of the gospel. However, all these money are misappropriated and it is quite common these days to hear of people setting up churches, all for the riches now associated with being "a man of God".

When people try to complain about this misappropriations, they are silenced with sayings such as "You should not question a man of God" and several other silly things.

You'll see people even praising corrupt politicians and antagonizing any one who dares to speak out. A huge percentage of the Nigerian youth have grown up to believe that corruption is the norm. I have met people who would proudly say "Let them have their time, we'll all do the same when we get there also". With this kind of mentality, how can corruption leave the country any time soon?

How can you prosecute one individual for engaging in corrupt practices? Corruption is a long chain, which consists of several people. When you try to prosecute an individual, you find your boss t the top trying to hush you up, due to the fact that he will definitely be implicated if a trial is carried out. Corruption is a network, several people are involved and your decision to bring the perpetrators to book might affect several people. Hence, your decision to ensure justice is frustrated.

We need to break the chain of corruption. We need to be the change we want to see in the world. Yes, we all want a country which is better than it is currently but this will only be possible if corruption can be removed from the equation. Go out there and be the change you want to see.
