EXCELLENT SPIRIT
Then this Daniel was preferred above the president and princes, because an excellent spirit was in him and the king thought to set him over the whole realm.

To be EXCELLENT is to excel above others. An extremely good spirit was in Daniel. This spirit is only the spirit of God that has no comparison. Daniel did not get this spirit by years of experience nor by education.
It was not a mere talent that raised Daniel to his high position. He gave himself to God and refused to be defiled by the king's meat and drink even from his youthful days. This excellent spirit was:..
(I)A spirit of self-control. He kept his body under God. He held the mastery of his animal nature in God. He laid an iron hand upon his appetites and passions. There is a great lesson here. Self-control is a necessary ingredient for effective Christian life.
(2) A spirit of genuine piety Daniel was above all, a man of God. It is believed that his convictions were the fruit of early training.

Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old, he will not depart from it (Prov. 22:6). To him, God was a reality, a living and reliable friend, to whom he could take every difficulty to and on whom he could trust in every danger. It was this that carried him through. It was his excellent spirit that helped out. His piety actually led to his promotion.
(3)A spirit of unshaken faith in God. All through his troubles, he never lost confidence in God, never failed to pray at all times. Daniel lived a life of example to us all and if we allow God to be in control of all, we are people most blessed.
This statement literally means that in Daniel excellent sprit predominated, was uppermost, and was enthroned. Excellence something that excels, goes beyond, predominates, and the word lying beyond this word excellent carries exactly that meaning.
The principal thing in Daniel was not the physical; the spirit was the dominant factor in the personality of this man. In Daniel four things are discovered as follows: (a) A man of purpose: Daniel purposed in his hear that he would not defile himself with the king's meat, Daniel I Purpose is a feeling of determination. Daniel purposed or determined in his hear not to defile himself. Before the meat came, he had already taken a decision, when the meat actually came, he stood by his decision. Every i . Christian needs to purpose not to do evil. Evil is everywhere but our decision stops us from doing it. This means you plan to be holy. (b) Aman ofprayer Nothing stands out more clearly than prayer
When the interpretation of the king's dream was asked, he called his friends together, and they prayed and finally result came. a decree was signed against prayer, Daniel never stopped praying and then he was thrown into the lion's den. The Lord was there before he arrived because he prayed. Christians please pray, God will hear you. (c) Aman of Perception. Because Daniel purposed righteously and also prayed, he was now able to receive insight in the things of the spirit. He got the meaning ofthe King's dreams, the meaning of the v,Titings on the wall etc. A man ofperception must have an excellent spirit in him.
(d) A man of power. When you take this position of purpose and maintain it, take this life of prayer and follow it, that if you have this quick, keen perception of God by the Holy Spirit, that you will now have worldly power to fight physically, No. This power here is the power to say no to sin and all manner of evil.
According to Titus 1 and 12, it is said, "for the grace of G0d that brings salvation has appeared to all men, it teaches us to say "SO" to ungodliness". The highest courage is not the courage of the battlefield: it is moral courage, the power to say "NO". When you have a purpose,y0U pray, you have perception by the Holy Spirit, you must say No. That is the Excellent Spirit.
Great words @iksilva. Let me add the forth:
4) Daniel had the Spirit of obedience and integrity:
Daniel wouldn't do anything against the laws of God. All he knew about God before they were taking captive was still intact in his mind, just like the Rechabites.
