Is Consumer Protection Council A Charade?

Something has been bothering me recently and my concern was recently buttressed this Wednesday at the local wing of the Murtala Mohammed Airport Lagos Nigeria. This informed this issue am going to be discussing about on this post. I booked Arik air for 3pm on Wednesday the 14th of February 2018 from Lagos to Abuja. I got to the airport about 5 mins before 3 pm and was told that the cabin has been closed so I needed to pay for no-show and I humbly paid 5000 Naira without complains. My flight was then rescheduled to 5pm on same day. At 5pm it was announced that the flight has been postponed for 30 minutes it didn’t bother me much at first, so I said to myself its just 30 minutes. By 5:45 pm another announcement came that the flight has been postponed for another 30 Minutes that was when I got annoyed and walked up to customer service and demanded for an explanation because I could not understand why I paid a no-show fee for coming 5 minutes to time and here I am been delayed with no consequence to Arik Air.
Now this brings me to my point who bears the consequence when the provider of service falters or did not meet up with the terms of agreement.

Some school of thought feels that good customer service covers for the blunders committed by service providers, so they feel if the providers of service’s customer services apologies appropriately it covers for the loses incurred by the actions or inactions of the service provider.
But I think that the brunt for breach of service agreement should be shouldered by the service provider and there should be consequences for them, that is where the consumer protection agencies come in. It is a pity that these agencies do not practice what they preach for instance one of the basic rights for a consumer as enshrined in the consumer protection council law is the right for satisfaction of basic needs and this was totally breached in the recount of my ordeal with Arik air but when I wrote to the consumer protection council of Nigeria nothing was done about it and this is the ordeal a lot of people in Nigeria pass through.
We have seen this type of scenario even in our telecoms industry where a service provider would coerce a customer without his or her knowledge to pay for services he or she did not ask for. When the regulatory agencies tend to fine them they fine them a fraction of what they have robbed off the citizens and at some point, the whole issue is been politicized.
Now we have reached crossroads and it is now pertinent that every Nigerian should know that he or she has right which includes:

• The right to Satisfaction of Basic Needs
• The Right to Safety
• Thee Right to Information
• The Right to Choose
• The Right to Redress
• The Right to Consumer Education
• The Right to Consumer Representation
• The Right to a Healthy Environment

And we must rise and keep shouting and saying it aloud until the government hears us and rise up to protect it citizens from shoddy services and goods.
