The Work Thats Not Talked About

Sometimes the hardest work we will ever do is not the paid type. Its that of recovery of a self thats shattered physically and emotionally.

Only those who've been there will know how hard it is to get up, get showered and out the front door.

You don't even think about it when you are well.

But I know from my own experience and listening to many others that the work to recover to get in that shower, when you are emotionally at the bottom takes everything you have got and then some!

So don't just reward the end results also give yourself credit for the effort and the emotional work.

As you return to work, you may feel overwhelmed and panic attacks may appear. Its quite common as often people are more emotionally fragile than they realise. It takes time to fire on all cyclinders again.

Theres nothing to compare it to and so it can feel lonely and like you are crazy and you will never be well again. "Is this me, am I stuck this way" I have had those thoughts years ago.  "I thought I was strong" is often said. Its often because we have been strong for too long that we break.

The hardest work is often getting through the door when your body is trembling, your hands are clammy and your heart is racing.

Much patience is required.

So yes, sometimes the hardest work is never talked about nor paid, yet always worth it.
