প্রাণঘাতী ইনজেকশনে মৃত্যুদণ্ড কার্যকর স্থগিতে শেষ মুহূর্তের আপিলে জয়ী হয়েছেন যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের টেনেসি অঙ্গরাজ্যের দণ্ডিত এক আসামি।
জোড়া খুনের দায়ে মৃত্যুদণ্ড পাওয়া এই আসামির দাবি, তাঁর সাজা বৈদ্যুতিক চেয়ারের মাধ্যমে কার্যকর করুক কর্তৃপক্ষ।
বার্তা সংস্থা এএফপির প্রতিবেদনে জানানো হয়, মৃত্যুদণ্ড পাওয়া ব্যক্তির নাম এডমান্ড জাগোরস্কি (৬৩)। দুই ব্যক্তিকে গলা কেটে হত্যার দায়ে ১৯৮৪ সালে এডমান্ডের মৃত্যুদণ্ডাদেশ হয়।
আজ বৃহস্পতিবার এডমান্ডের মৃত্যুদণ্ড কার্যকরের দিন নির্ধারিত হয়েছিল। কিন্তু প্রাণঘাতী ইনজেকশনে তাঁর মৃত্যুদণ্ড কার্যকর স্থগিতে গতকাল বুধবার আপিলে জয়ী হন তিনি।
এডমান্ড তাঁর মৃত্যুদণ্ড বৈদ্যুতিক চেয়ারের মাধ্যমে কার্যকর করতে টেনেসির কারা কর্তৃপক্ষের কাছে অনুরোধ জানিয়েছিলেন। কিন্তু কারা কর্তৃপক্ষ এই অনুরোধ নাকচ করে।Eprothomalo
পরে এডমান্ডের আইনজীবীরা ফেডারেল আদালতে জরুরি আপিল করেন।
আদালতে এডমান্ডের আইনজীবীরা দাবি করেন, তাঁদের মক্কেলের মৃত্যুদণ্ড কার্যকরে বৈদ্যুতিক চেয়ার ব্যবহার করা হোক।
আপিল আদালত গতকাল বলেন, এডমান্ডের আপিল বিবেচনায় আসায় তাঁর মৃত্যুদণ্ড কার্যকর করার বিষয়টি স্থগিত থাকবে।
