When a forest is set ablaze,most animals are repelled, but black fire beetles are attracted. It is surprising that a creature would choose to enter a situation from which all other forest creatures are very much attempting to exit. The beetles must have a very good reason for that.

HOW BLACK FIRE BEETLES FIND FOREST FIRES

Black fire beetles have sensors next to its middle legs,and they are called pit organs,this pit organs can detect infrared radiation from a
forest fire. The forest fires generate radiation which in turn generates heat in the pit organs and then directs the beetles to head for the flames.
But there are other sensors in black fire beetles fire-detection tool kit. Black fire beetles’ antennas detect quantities of certain chemicals that fires release into the air when their favorite trees burn. Black fire beetles
can use their “smoke detector” antennas
to find a single smoldering tree from a distance. The combination of the abilities of their antennas makes these beetles appear to sense and find forest fires from a distance of more than "30 miles".Researchers are looking to the beetle’s pit organs and antennas to
improve devices that detect infrared radiation and fire.These antennas give inspiration to engineers to develop fire detection systems which are more sensitive and have the ability to distinguish between the by-products of forest fires and other chemical compounds. The blackfire beetle’s unique way of finding a place to lay its eggs is astounding.
