The Devil Is In The Details - Displaced Reality
A Progressive Revelation
It seems that I am forever experimenting with new techniques for producing my artwork. I would say that I probably have 4 hours or more of R&D time for every hour of production. It is not that I have to R&D every project. I perhaps have to do some sort of research on on about 1 in 10 projects. When I do it can take some time to refine a technique.
Some of the research is to gain a better working knowledge of the host of tools that I work with. I use a core set of tools do the bulk of my work. For 3D modeling I tend to use Autodesk 3DS Max, The Foundry's Modo, And Pixologic's Zbrush.
Displaced Reality - Creating 3D Models With Displacement
Most of the time I use fairly typical modeling techniques. I start off with a basic geometric primatives. These are basic solid shapes like cubes, cylinders , spheres and others. I used them in various combinations and slice, dice, and manipulate them to become fairly realistic looking models of everything from furniture to space ships.
In the two pictures above to get that level of details with traditional modeling techniques would be a never ending challenge. This is where displacement modeling comes to play. In most of my tools displacement maps are projected from black and white images onto high density geometry. The modeling software uses the different values to push the geometry into position giving the surface an incredible amount of detail in a short time. This can be a very productive way of achieving the look you are going for. It generally comes at the cost of a high number of polygons. There are some ways of optimizing things but it can only go so far without loosing the details.
