The arrow glided in the air, its tip aiming for the lone sentry on the wall. By some divine chance, the sentry turned at once, depriving the arrow of its target. Reflexes took over and a loud gong narrated the tale in its native language.

Gabriel hurried out of the gates with a hundred soldiers behind him. Michael would follow with the host. His task was to prevent the intruders from reaching the gates.

A flash of yellow light from the wall outlined the landscape, revealing a horde of hideous creatures banging their weaponry.

"Steady lads!" Gabriel called out as the sky rained arrows.

The plains roared with voices eager for revenge. Gabriel could almost feel the hatred in the air. He prayed the creator that Michael would arrive on time and drew his sword

Swords against swords sparked yellow flints across the plains. Soldiers robed in white were dragged to their fall and welcomed with the brutal ends of hammers and axes and swords.

"Hold the line!" Gabriel announced as his sword relived a body of its horned head. His sword flew in the air, separating limbs from bodies, daring the enemies to step into its widening arch.

One, two, three... Gabriel was just a soldier. Perhaps one of the best, but he was only one. He felt his men fall around him. The enemy had come prepared. It was like a game of chess and the enemy had lot of pawns to sacrifice.

Gabriel felt the slice of an axe on his right wing. Two swings and the attacker paid with his life. He saw many more approach him, eager to finish what their comrade started. Gabriel tightened his grip and admonish himself to die fighting.

Perhaps he would die fighting, but not that day. It rained divine judgement in form of thunder strikes and yellow lightening on the enemy. Gabriel cast a grateful look as Archangel Michael swooped in with thousands of angels bearing friendly trumpets

On earth, an oblivious nomad took a picture of the lingering light after the sun set. It was not his place to know of ethereal battles beyond the mortal skies

Sort:

Nice story! And I love the ending, with that "oblivious nomad."

I'm sure he might like to know what happens beyond the mortal skies, but hopefully, he can find peace even without knowing.
