Placenta smoothie anyone?
So what I didn't mention in Kai's birth story was what we did with the placenta. Well first we left it attached for I don't know how many hours, but a lot of hours to allow for Kai to get all the blood and goodness that the placenta has stored up for him then we tied the cord with organic natural fiber yarn and snip snip, we cut him free of his leash.
The placenta was then very delicately processed by the incredible Keni and prepared for my consumption. Yes that's right, I ATE IT! He pulled off the membrane, or the bag it was in and then cut it into chunks and froze it. Every morning I woke up got some delicious baby snuggles then whipped up a beautiful placenta smoothie. Yum yum.
I swear it's not as bad as it sounds! But I do have some tips for anyone wanting to do this. First, don't look at it too closely, cause duh, there are bits of, well, you in there. And second, drink it in a timely manner. If it sits too long it gets weird. I could go into more detail but I don't think that will do anyone any good. Oh and no you don't taste it.... If you follow my tips you don't at least.
My favorite smoothie recipe was banana, passion fruit juice, a scoop of maca, a pinch of bee pollen and of course the infamous placenta chunks!
Reasons that I consumed my placenta are that it is said to help with your milk supply, help with energy levels (which lets be honest is non existent with a newborn, so any extra help its welcomed with open arms) aid in your body rearranging back to its pre baby organization... You know your organs being in a chaotic mess and all. It helps shrink your uterus, fend off postpartum depression and regulate your hormone. All of these things are great right!? So why not give it a go, eh!? My thoughts exactly!
I think it's also important to add that the other ingredients to my smoothies are quite important in my opinion for after care. Bananas were important to me because well I was terrified of pooping and we all know the more fiber the better right!? Sorry for being graphic but I think we are kinda past the shy timid stuff by now. Am I right?
Ok so bananas are also a high carb fruit which was important to me to help fuel my days and replenish my body from the intensity that was birth. Passion fruit juice is packed full of vitamin c and a ton of other beneficial stuff, but vitamin c is really great for boosting your immune system and helping your body heal wounds. Bee pollen contains all the minerals we need each day. And finally maca. Maca is a superfood and while it has a TON of health benefits the main reason why it was important to me to add it to my smoothies was because it helps balance hormones, which of course were all out of wack!
So between having a natural, intervention free, drug free birth and drinking my placenta smoothies I was completely healed and feeling great by 2 weeks postpartum! Yay! Next time I will certainly do this all over again! If you consumed your placenta please let me know how your experience with it went and if you think it helped aid in your postpartum healing. Oh and yes I used cute pictures of Kai instead of placenta pictures cause he's way cuter! Hope you enjoy them as much as I do!
Nice post and Great food and cute baby..
that is one shocking yet exciting experience you share. Eventhough it is not possible in my religion and culture to do so (there another ceremony for the baby placenta and it is burried).
cute and funny baby ..

Another highly informative, highly interesting post! Lovely baby you have. While living in Ecuador my friend from Argentina did the same thing as you regarding the placenta. It think that's awesome! Stay healthy and happy! -Dan
Wow thats wonderful! I love hearing other women doing these things! Thanks for sharing that!
You're welcome. I don't recall if they did it in a shake like you did. But I know they ate it one way or another. Both the mother and the father!
Wow! That's so cool! I wonder if there are health benefits for the dad too?
They told me there are, as basically the placenta is a super food. Supposedly it would benefit anyone who eats it, but to be the father maybe there's some connection on another level! Beats me, a bit strange to wrap one's head around.
