Graceful (Freewrite)

As far as I could remember, when I first learned the word 'graceful', it was often illustrated with either a dancer or a ballerina. Oh yes, and even the swan and the flamingo. And I think it is still the same today - whenever teachers teach on this word, they relate it with dancers or ballerina or a graceful lady. No one will link the word to kpop dance or beat boxing or kung-fu. Or a graceful elephant!

So happen I know of a lady, a mother specifically, told me this about her daughter, in front of her daughter. After she found out my son joined the kpop dance at school, she conveniently added, "My daughter isn't as graceful and as gentle as a girl, you know what she joined? Kung-fu!"

Well, the mother was an acquaintance, we meet each other everyday when we send our child to school, so I did not know how to comment further on what she said.

Does being graceful have to be gentle? Maybe every gentle person will be graceful. But I think her daughter who enjoys Kungfu can be graceful too. Despite the "yee-yak" or "kicking" and "boxing".

I don't know.

I know society likes to label people. Maybe not purposely, but subconsciously. Maybe human just love to compare. The gymnast, she looks so pretty and graceful. Oh dear, look at the lady swimmer, she has too huge a shoulder.

I am not sure which direction I am going for this freewrite but my main point is, I think, being graceful, is the state of the heart. Although I know no one will think Incredible Hulk as graceful, duh..., but I am thinking being graceful does not necessarily have to be someone who can dance or a good ballerina, or those lady with slender legs and pleasant body figures whose walking movement could swift the direction of the wind.

I would like to tell my sons one day when it is time to choose girlfriend, to find someone who is graceful on the outside and also have a heart full of grace. A graceful heart. One who is willing to forgive and to apologize appropriately.

And I really don't mind if they fall in love with a big-sized tall girl, one whom society may not see them as graceful, as long as she is graceful in her mannerism, character and behaviour. Because seriously, I think the way elephants swing their trunk and flap their ears is graceful too. Ha! Although yes, I do admire those gymnasts and ballerinas.
