#mondaytrance - Watussi by Harmonia

I'm going to do something very different for #mondaytrance and focus on trance the genre in the most abstract form. I got a lot of response a few weeks ago when posting a James Holden remix which is pretty unrecognizable as a trance track by current standards and take a page from his thoughts on trance and focus on it more conceptually. As Holden himself puts it "Of course I mean trance: the state of mind, not the sadly misnamed genre. Music like this stretches back beyond the start of history and will be around until a time when glow sticks and middle-aged Dutch men pulling poses are long forgotten. Modern neuroscience has shown that this stuff does indeed have magical effects on the brain and our state of consciousness – if we let it.”  

This isn't me being some new age guru spouting about the purity of this music, this is simply an example of my own inspirations that I draw from when making my own music. I find I can pull more from these records than I can from much of modern music, though I do have a deep love of many trance songs mainly due to nostalgia for my younger years. 

Watussi comes to us from 1974, 11 years before I was born and seems otherworldly to this date. I first encountered it on a memorable At The Controls mix by James Holden (which is easily one of my all time favorite mixes) and it's simple descending musical loop and amazingly crafted soundscape makes this song particularly timeless for me. How someone could make a track like this in 1974 is beyond me and makes me appreciate it much more. It simply lends it a quality that would be hard to produce in the modern landscape.
