A Hack into Social Success

If you are someone who doesn't consider themselves to be a 'social' person, then people must be pretty scary to be around.

I get it...

Their googly eyes, how they get into their cliques & exclude you, excessive small talk that feels like a punishment etc.

I am sure these are the types of things that go in your head before entering a social event.

'How do you know all of this?'

I know this because I had similar mannerisms back in the days.

But there was a hack that I learned that helped me fix many of these issues.

'What was that?'

Being the camera man.

'Huh??'

The dead Social Event

I remember one day in my early 20s I was attending a multicultural event.

It was packed with people from all around the world, having a good time.

But for me?

The event was dead....

Mainly because I didn't know anyone & didn't want to go out of my way to introduce myself to strangers.

So I just sat back & observed...

As I was observing, one person stood out like a sore thumb.

The event leader.

A gentleman in his 20s, thick glasses & wearing Desi clothes, was panicking because his cameraman had cancelled last second.

If you are an event planner, then you know that the pictures are the lifeblood of an event.

He was frantically running around the event with a worried look telling the other volunteers what had happened.

Hm...

I am not doing anything in this event, wonder if I could be of some assistance?

Didn't have a legit camera, but did have my iPhone.

So I approached the gentleman & asked if he'd like me to be the cameraman for the event.

He looked at me hesitantly, but knew that he had no other options, so the guy accepted.

Camera Man Mode: On

The next few hours were nothing short of spectacular.

'Wait why? Seems like you just signed up to work for free.'

No my friend, that's not how I viewed it.

Rather, I went up to completely random people, asked them to pose for pictures, started some small talk, cracked some jokes, made a boatload of connections & created some dope memories.

Although the event was brutal at first, it had turned completely around when I changed my game plan.

Just with a minor tweak in my social game the dead event had turned into a long lasting one.

That's the beauty of being socially dynamic.

You can always find a way to turn things around.

Moral of The Story

'So are you telling me that I am supposed to be a a camera man for events?'

Not quite.

But what I am telling you is that if you're a socially anxious person, you can always get creative.

The camera was a vehicle for me to exercise my social muscle.

It got me warmed up to social interactions & gave me an excuse to start convos with strangers.

And starting convos with strangers was something that I would not have felt comfortable doing out of the blue back in the days.

But sometimes, all you need is that nudge in the right direction.

If you are someone who is struggling with social interactions, then you need creativity on your side.

Creativity is one of the core elements of social dynamics.

Whether it's a camera or another vehicle, find what your weapon is in the initial stages.
