Let's admit it. As humans we have a tendency to want to control things. But the reality is that there are tons of matters that we just have no say in. We can only control what we can control. This is something I usually live by. But I forgot this important lesson about 2 weeks ago when I gambled away about 2 weeks of my earnings from Steemit. What a bonehead move.
Before I lost money I had won close to $500 playing a virtual game of rolling dice on Steemdice. Well I had lost that in a matter of days after winning all that money. It stung like bees and cold wind at first. But then I knew it wouldn't be long before I had made the money back so I got over it.
I'm nearly recovered from the lost but what I took away from losing that money was even more important. I know to remain focused on that which I can control and leave the rest alone. Trust me it is much less stressful that way. This is coming from someone who used to worry so much it would make me feel nauseated.
You can win BIG gambling but you can also lose even BIGGER. Quick money usually doesn't last as they say. Lesson learned and now I have moved on. Now it's back to stackin the SBDs and marching towards my financial freedom goals and via Steemit/Dtube. I wanted to share this with you in hopes to encourage you to stop worrying about the things you can't control and focus on that which you can. It's funny what lessons can be learned from making such unwise decisions. Much love and peace to everybody.
I live that you brought up this topic as it gives me the opportunity to share my gambling experience with you.
Back then in the university, my second year to be precise , I hadn't any interest in football and so was never interested in football betting. I always heard people talk about their earnings to the tone of hundreds of thousands naira but I never let it bother me.
On My way back from school with a friend one day, we passed by a betting Shop and my friends said I should escort himnto go place a bet and I did coz I became a lil inquisitive as to know what happens there and how the betting stuff is done.
We went in and he placed a bet of just 200 naira, while he was doing that, I was equally asking questions and in no time he was done. He asked me to risk playing same game as it was just 200 naira and wouldnt hurt if I did. I reluctantly placed the bet as well and we walked home.
The next day in school, I got a call from my friend that we had won as much as 6,000 naira from the bet placed and I didn't believe him. I was broke and was trying to manage the little my parents send me for the month. 6k was a while lot and I was speechless . He came to school that day and handed over the money to me and I looked in amazement at how easy it was to make money through football betting. Little did I know I was heading for doom.
From that day on @humanearl I became an addict. But the funny thing is that, that was the first and last time I ever won...hahahaha.
I kept trying over and over again, each time I hear how much people win, I get motivated and tell myself that one day it would be my turn but my turn never came. This continued for years and i lost everything I had saved up before I left school.
When I left school, I didn't have access to a betting Shop and started online football betting and that was where I was duped the sum of 25k from the little I was able to save up after school and that was when I called it quits with betting.
I stopped betting from that day and I learned my lesson. Now I tell anyone who cared to listen never to participate in that coz it will not only become a habitual practice , it will also render you broke and pennyless.
I hope this goes out as a lesson to everyone else...thanks for sharing bro.
Hi Earl :)
The idea of steemit is to build something long-term. You're doing great! That's why I am surprised that you participate in such games. But the lesson is worth more than any money. Money eats brain. Has all of us ever gone like this. You have to be reminded some times. The whole Crypto story has already gone off hard. When I think that I once had 1000 BTC's. We all make mistakes. I too had to learn my lesson. Thank you for your openness! A very important topic.
It is important for us to always remember that gambling is a business, and that business would not be so widespread if it wasn't an income generator. And since money doesn't appear out of thin air (at least not fiat money!), that means everything is always in favor of the house. No exceptions.
With something like steemdice, we're betting that somehow we are going to "defeat" a random number generator in a computer program. It doesn't make sense.
Yes, of course there are professional gamblers and they make a lot of money. BUT if you notice, they only tend to play games that involve a human factor, like Blackjack and Poker. And because they are "professionals," they spend 8-10 hours every day learning, studying, evaluating, becoming experts.
I'm glad you found the wisdom to stay with doing things you have a measure of control over!
Dear @humanearl I think gambling is not the best thing in the journey of life. What I have personally learned in my life is that the money which comes from hardwork and slowly last longer and quick money comes in flash and also go in a flash and in fact it is just like drug addicts of life.
So I awlays stay away from this kind of thing and also advise the same to others.
And 120 SBD is almost my 2 months earning in steemit.
Yeah hardwork pays and the money that vomes from it tends to last for long.
Its never good tonrely on luck. Because the gambler usually relies on luck, he does not seem to mind finding work. The gambler waits for the time when he hits the jackpot and become an instant millionaire. He has seen too much money already and he will not be satisfied with small earnings and small winnings. He wants the big jackpot money and he will keep gambling and longing for the jackpot.
Thanks@humanearlfor sharing this post with all of us.
Gambling Lesson Learned After Losing 120 SBD
Well from where to start today i too feel sad for your Loss man but as you said it you also won close to $500 and after few days lost it all don't get me wrong but we all including me does this mistake we are upto the things which we see shining coming from an personal experience of mine i can say that because i have lost too and i have no shame of admitting that.... in life we always had control on our decision but moment like these is what make us uncontrollable and we give up too much on things that don't deserve.
I'm nearly recovered from the lost but what I took away from losing that money was even more important.
Great to know that you are recovered from the loss but man always take this as a lesson i took this way back and have not been in this field for long now and now i only think only effort will pay nothing else in this world people are on to our money they will do anything to take it away from us. Money is important no doubt if one has nothing they can't even live life now that's true and it hurt too life is getting complicated all along the way.
Now it's back to stackin the SBDs and marching towards my financial freedom goals and via Steemit/Dtube.
I like this spirit man !!! you are onto it keep stackin those with your hard work and great content keep inspiring along the way and you will make it in double quick time by the way i feel like these things are meant to be happen in life as they only give life learning opportunity with experiences which will remain in mind.
I have a sour history of gambling when I was in High School. I once played with all my money and in the quest to recover the lost money, played with part of my school fees. It was a horrible experience cos I lost even more. I stopped after a much bigger experience just before my graduation year. Gambling had made me to start missing classes. I was lagging behind. Our classes then had arms from A to L. The principal did a weird thing of placing students in classes according to their academic performances. The best science class was 'L' while the dullest science students were in 'H'. I was in L before I was suddenly demoted to H in the third term of my penultimate year. It was heart breaking and pathetic for me. It was common knowledge that most of the people in that class would repeat that session or even be expelled. It was my greatest challenge in school. It was at that point that I dropped gambling and of 47 of us on that class, 9 of is managed to get promoted while others either repeated the class or changed to other schools.
I reckon also that ponzi schemes are forms of gamble. I am a victim of this too, but I will not say to what extent. However, it was so bad that I used other people's money and eventually I lost massively!
Sincerely, I'm done with gambling of any form. Thanks to steemit, which is actually my consolation for what I lost in ponzi schemes. Of only I new about steemit in 2016, when I joined ponzi. It's all history now though. Looking ahead, I'm committed to making money with my intellect and thanks to steemit for that wonderful opportunity.
Bitconnect? No. I fell victim of other ponzi schemes before I even learnt of bitconnect.
I bought some bitcoin in 2016 when it was around $500/bitcoin. I had close to 0.3 bitcoin then. I wanted to use it for a MMM ponzi scheme but I heard that there was a faster one -AimBtc. Three days went by and then I knew I had to let it go, my coin was gone! It was painful because it was a lot of money for me and I just lost it like that. Now I imagine if I just left it in my wallet since then. My 0.3 bitcoin at $500 would have become would have become something else now.
It's all gone now though and steemit is here. I am consoled.
Yes bro. Steemit is wonderful and so promising. This is just earning from what we can deliver to our community; not a ponzi scheme. As more professionals continue to adopt and migrate their businesses to the steemit platform, the steemit community grows stronger
@humanearl did you loose to bitconnect, i am sorry friend.
Yeh that shit was a disaster. I lost some good money too. I moved some to the bitconnect wallet to stake and others to the bccx exchange(potential bs). Exchanged bcc for $150 bccx. Once this exchange opens I can hopefully cash out and get away from that shit.
But i have learnt that research plays a great part in investing into anything. I did mine and there were mixed opinions so thought I'd find out and as expected learnt it the hard way. Coming down to crypto, I guess trial and error is important to succeed with crypto. For next time I know to go with my gut feeling, do some research rather than getting influenced
@georgechuks Oh no. That's why I didn't get involved with Bitconnect at all. I knew it was a Ponzi scheme and it was only a matter of time before it collapsed.
Being human is all about making mistakes and learning from those mistakes to become better than we were before committing follies. What you did doesn't matter anymore but matter of the fact is what have you learnt from it? And I am pleased to unable to find even a glimpse of negativity from your thoughts. You have learnt to make your life more peaceful and happy than before.
Experience that you have just shared is really a learning lesson for many. It will benefit a lot of people. To grow, we first should accept our faults and then improve for better. You did it man with an open heart and you have become better and I am happy to see that. Not only you are growing but teaching an inspiring lesson for us.
I really appreciate @humanear your broad vision and positive thinking that is a light for many souls.
I really appreciate what you have shared here. You are so real.
I am very sure a lot of people will learn from this post.
I have been in those shoes before@humanearl.
When i was into gambling, the addiction rearranged my life so that i think i can control my time, money, and ambition.
In the gamblers mind, he is smart enough and equal to the challenge of beating the house at their own game, but most times just like you said, one can't control certain things.
Just like you said, you can win BIG gambling but you can also lose even BIGGER
Although some people claim to have put up a business because of their winnings, but there are countless people who have gone the opposite way. Most people have been better off when they did not start gambling but they went bankrupt when they were addicted to the vice.
Thanks again @humanearl
Never seen anyone as real on steemit as @humanearl. Not everyone would openly admit to the fact that they gamble but he did in a bid to make others learn from his mistakes. He is the realest bro I have met in here and I am glad that I did met him. Hope someday we get to meet in person coz he is an icon to me now.
@georgechuks I can't imagine your experience but it seems you have taken a good lesson out of it. Part of me sharing my life with others is about really digging deep and sharing even the dumb or unwise choices. This is not only so I learn but also so someone else can learn too.
@sistem I'm just a vessel bro. I can't take any credit for what God has done in my life. But I am glad to be able to inspire you and others. Thanks for the compliment it's humbling.
Yeah i agree with you @humanearl.
Everyone, at some point in their life, has made a mistake. Sometimes we get lucky and only falter a little, making it through the problem relatively intact. Other times, we mess up a lot and have to fix what was damaged over a long period of time. However, the same is true for most, if not all cases—those who make the mistake learn from it. Often times, our failures teach us valuable lessons that we only gained because of the experience we gathered after messing up. I have personally achieved a wealth of knowledge and experience just from all of my own little mishaps, and a few major ones.
I live that you brought up this topic as it gives me the opportunity to share my gambling experience with you.

Your stories are gold. You and me both learned a lesson.
Hi Earl :)

Wow. I couldn't even imagine having that much BTC and then trading it before it takes off. I know that's hard to get over.
My plan is to hold steem until it hits around the $3,000 mark. If it does get that high.
I am sorry to hear that, sincerely.

I feel that that steemdice is rigged and the number generator is not really true. Maybe that's just because I lost that I think that way.
Dear @humanearl I think gambling is not the best thing in the journey of life. What I have personally learned in my life is that the money which comes from hardwork and slowly last longer and quick money comes in flash and also go in a flash and in fact it is just like drug addicts of life.

Dang that sucks. I recently invested in a project where I lost money. The good thing is that I only lost a little bit.
Hopefully your investment for steemit does well.
Yes bro. Steemit is wonderful and so promising. This is just earning from what we can deliver to our community; not a ponzi scheme. As more professionals continue to adopt and migrate their businesses to the steemit platform, the steemit community grows stronger
I lost a lot to ponzi scheme, which is like a sister to gambling.
I was sceptical but everybody around me were making bank. I gave it a try too, that was exactly when it all went down.
Was it Bitconnect?
Not bitconnect, it was a kind of 'multiply your cash doing nothing' that was travelling all over Africa.

@humanearl,
Bro it has a strategy to play! Not very easy to win, but once I made a huge profit through it!
Cheers~
The thing is that I had a strategy that was winning me all that money but still lost.
I really appreciate what you have shared here. You are so real.
