Oggi voglio continuare a condividere con voi il racconto del mio viaggio che ho fatto nella città di Bergamo, che ricordo quest'anno essere capitale della cultura insieme a Brescia. Continuerò condividendo le foto che ho scattato, ma proseguirò anche il racconto che avevo già iniziato nell'altro post, e vi lascio qui sotto il link nel caso l'abbiate perso.

Nel secondo giorno, praticamente sono salito a piedi fino alla parte alta di Bergamo. Dal mio punto di vista, è la parte più bella della città, quella dove sembra che il tempo si sia fermato. In questa parte si trova la piazza Vecchia, circondata da importanti edifici del 1100, tra cui il Palazzo della Ragione, il Campanone e la bellissima basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore. Vi consiglio anche di non perdervi la storica cattedrale.

Si nota fin da subito che questa è la parte più turistica della città. Le vie erano piene di turisti e ho sentito parlare tantissime lingue. Ho notato tantissimi polacchi; infatti, anche la proprietaria dell'appartamento mi ha detto che il turismo dell'Europa dell'est è in aumento, ma ci sono anche tanti americani e spagnoli. Quello che ho notato subito è che ci sono pochi italiani, qualche famiglia al massimo.

Queste vie sono ricche di bar e ristoranti tipici, ma anche di piccoli panifici e pasticcerie che vendono i prodotti tipici di Bergamo. Ho scattato alcune foto in cui vi mostro piatti tipici di Bergamo trasformati in dolci; ad esempio, la polenta e osei, che in italiano vuol dire polenta e uccelli, rivisitata in una ricetta dolce.

In questa zona, i prezzi di tutti i prodotti li ho trovati abbastanza elevati, ed è normale che sia così perché è il punto più turistico della città. Appena sono arrivato nella piazza Vecchia, ho visitato la biblioteca civica, fondata nel 1760, che raccoglie un patrimonio librario di circa 710.000 volumi, 11.200 manoscritti e musiche, pergamene, carteggi, stampe, disegni, mappe, fotografie: insomma, un ricchissimo archivio storico del Comune di Bergamo. Organizzano anche dei tour gratuiti all'interno di questi archivi, cosa sicuramente molto interessante.

Poi mi sono spostato e sono entrato nel Palazzo della Ragione, un palazzo storico del XIII secolo dove c'era una mostra. A quanto ho capito, questo palazzo è stato acquisito dalle gallerie moderne di Bergamo. Vicino c'è anche il Campanone, una torre del XII secolo della famiglia Suardi, che offre viste panoramiche. Si dice che lì si trovi la campana più grande di tutta la Lombardia, e con soli €5 di biglietto potete salire fino alle campane.

Due cose che non potete perdervi in una visita a Bergamo sono la Cappella Colleoni, un mausoleo annesso alla basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore costruito intorno al 1500, e la basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore stessa, costruita intorno al XII secolo. La cappella ospita i resti del condottiero Bartolomeo Colleoni e di sua figlia. Purtroppo, le foto sono vietate in questi luoghi. La basilica contiene numerose opere d'arte, tra cui affreschi di Lorenzo Lotto e la tomba del compositore bergamasco Gaetano Donizetti, famoso per le sue oltre 70 opere. L'ingresso a questa chiesa è a pagamento, €5, ma durante le funzioni religiose l'ingresso è gratuito.

L'ultima cosa che ho visitato nella Bergamo Alta è stata la cattedrale di San Alessandro Martire, costruita nel 1561. Fortunatamente, qui si possono scattare foto e l'entrata è completamente gratuita. All'interno si trovano le reliquie di Papa Giovanni XXIII e le tombe dei vescovi di Bergamo.

Dimenticavo di menzionare che per salire nella Bergamo Alta, oltre agli ottimi collegamenti di autobus, c'è anche una funicolare storica costruita nel 1887. Il viaggio è breve, solo 5 minuti, da Bergamo Bassa a Bergamo Alta. Io l'ho fatto a piedi, ma c'è anche questa opzione per chi preferisce.

Spero che il mio racconto sia stato interessante. Domani pubblicherò sicuramente un altro post sul mio terzo giorno a Bergamo, in cui ho visitato un palazzo e un giardino interessanti, e poi sono salito alla rocca di Bergamo, da cui si ha un panorama a 360 gradi di tutta la zona circostante. On the second day, I practically walked up to the upper part of Bergamo. From my perspective, it's the most beautiful part of the city, where time seems to have stood still. In this area lies Piazza Vecchia, surrounded by important buildings from the 1100s, including Palazzo della Ragione, the Campanone bell tower, and the beautiful Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore. I also recommend not missing out on the historic cathedral.

You can immediately notice that this is the most touristy part of the city. The streets were crowded with tourists, and I heard many different languages being spoken. I noticed a lot of Polish tourists; in fact, even the owner of the apartment mentioned to me that Eastern European tourism is on the rise. However, there are also many Americans and Spaniards. What struck me immediately was the scarcity of Italians, with only a few families at most.

These streets are rich in typical bars and restaurants, as well as small bakeries and pastry shops that sell Bergamo's local products. I took some photos showing Bergamo's typical dishes transformed into sweets; for example, "polenta e osei," which in English translates to "polenta and birds," reimagined as a sweet treat.

In this area, I found the prices of products to be relatively high, which is normal given that it's the most touristy part of the city. As soon as I arrived at Piazza Vecchia, I visited the civic library, founded in 1760, which houses a collection of around 710,000 volumes, 11,200 manuscripts and musical scores, parchments, correspondence, prints, drawings, maps, and photographs—a rich historical archive of the Municipality of Bergamo. They also offer free tours inside these archives, which is certainly very interesting.

Then I moved on and entered Palazzo della Ragione, a historical palace from the 13th century where there was an exhibition. As far as I understand, this palace has been acquired by the modern galleries of Bergamo. Nearby is the Campanone, a 12th-century tower belonging to the Suardi family, which offers panoramic views. It's said that it houses the largest bell in all of Lombardy, and for just €5, you can climb up to the bells.

Two things you cannot miss in a visit to Bergamo are the Colleoni Chapel, a mausoleum attached to the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore built around 1500, and the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore itself, constructed around the 12th century. The chapel contains the remains of the condottiero Bartolomeo Colleoni and his daughter. Unfortunately, photography is prohibited in these places. The basilica features numerous artworks, including frescoes by Lorenzo Lotto and the tomb of the Bergamo composer Gaetano Donizetti, famous for his over 70 operas. Entrance to this church costs €5, but during religious services, it's free.

The last thing I visited in Bergamo Alta was the Cathedral of St. Alexander Martyr, built in 1561. Fortunately, you're allowed to take photos inside, and the entrance is completely free. Inside, you can find the relics of Pope John XXIII and the tombs of the bishops of Bergamo.

I forgot to mention that to reach Bergamo Alta, apart from excellent bus connections, there's also a historic funicular built in 1887. The journey is short, only 5 minutes, from Bergamo Bassa to Bergamo Alta. I chose to walk, but this option is also available for those who prefer it.
