Simple Easy Worm Bin... Vermicompost
Have been making Vermicompost for a few years now using these dough trays, as bins, that I snagged from the pizza chain I work part time at. The Idea just came to me one day when we were thought some of the trays away because they were busted up a little.
They stack together very well. Drilled some holes in the middle tray and top one so the worms could move freely through there three story condominium. Did not drill any holes in the bottom tray so the worms wont escape.
We have only used earth worms that were caught. I have read that you shouldn't use this type of worm because It could carry disease. I have not had the problems that "they" say you will have when using regular earth worms. Who else uses regular earth worms and have you had any problems?
Sifting out the worms and larger pieces the worms have not digested yet is quite simple. I like to use a wheel barrel and 1/4 inch wire mesh. Goes pretty quick this way!
The end product, worm castings BLACK GOLD!! There isn't a plant that wont grow and thrive in this. It is also great to make a worm tea to feed your plants. But that is for another post!
Mixing the worm castings with a locally made potting mix. Going to be using this mixture for my soil block maker to start my seeds. Ill be showing y'all soon how to use a soil block maker.
Filled the Vermicompost bins back up. Used leaves, hay/straw and old shavings form the baby chickens. The worms will turn it over for me in no time!
THANK YOU FOR POPPING BY!!

Is it much better than just compost? I personally have a big piramide in the forest. Once a year I use all the compost and make a new pile.
Nice! It works great in starting your seeds to give the seeds that extra boost in the beginning.
Great post! Thank you. We've got to get a bin set up this spring so I appreciate the details on how you are doing it!
Thank you @walkerland! I found a old bathtub in the woods. Pulled it out and I'm going to use it as a big vermiculture soon.
Cool! I look forward to seeing that.
Love this! Vermicompost is on my list of to-do's. Great ingenuity with the dough boxes.
Thank you @fivedogfarm! Where there's a will there's a way.
Great post, nice way to recycle and build something useful!
Thank you @shalomacres!
